How to fix this?

I need to fix the end of a shaft on a crimper. There is a threaded bolt hole in the end of the shaft that is stripped. The bolt holds on a 10 point chain drive sprocket for the reel. Can a machine shop do something to restore the threads or will it have to be drilled and tapped to the next size? (that would mean the sprocket would have to be drilled out too, to accept the bigger bolt) Just wondering, can't get anything done till monday when the shops open anyway.

Maybe a Helicoil would work- its a coil that goes into the hole and "makes" new threads, for a smaller size bolt. Auto parts places have them. Its a kit. Might be a problem with using a smaller bolt on the sprocket- maybe a bushing would work there.

The Helicoil or thread insert he is talking about doesn't use a smaller bolt but is a thread insert repair to use the same size bolt. You drill out the stripped hole larger with proper size drill for the special size tap cutting threads for the thread insert bushing that puts new threads back in the hole of same size. Is the sprocket pinned or keyed somehow? It may need to be so doesn't tear the threads out again later. Also there are other brands of thread repair inserts out there too.

I know how your everyday average sledge hammer mechanic would fix that. But if I tell I'll have to sign some one else's name.

Drilling it deeper and tapping it will work. (4 bolt diameters drill, then tap with a normal tap followed by a plug tap to clean it up to near the bottom of the hole) Use a correct tap drill size.
Then use a bolt of high quality Grade 8. that is as long as the new threads need. JimN

Weld the sprocket right on the end of the shaft. If you ever have to pull it off use a dremel tool and cutoff wheel to cut the weld.
