I want to plant some strawberries and veggies in a raised bed situation and was wondering what you folks use to "raise" the row and specifics (how high/wide etc.) ? I also want to use either a ground landscape fabric cover or black plastic on top ? Any suggestions as to how and what would be appreciated sincerely. I have never used the raised bed or plastic as a growing method before in the garden so it's all greek to me. Want to use two rows 50' long each. Yours thoughts and opinions are welcome for sure.

The raised one I have are done with RR ties. My mom has some that are done with 2 by-s 2X4 ,2X6x and 2X12s. One of her beds is about 3 foot tall and sits on a cement slab where a propane was years ago. We filled it with a mix of composed manure and fresh manure and boy do thing grow

Jim,

We use thr landscape fabric on out truck farm It works well to stop the weed growth but also allows moisture to pass through, plastic will block moisture . The landscape fabric can be pulled up at the end of the season and used again next year. It come in dfferent widths we use the 3' and lay strip down both side of a row of plants an then pin it around the plants.

We built 20 raised beds last summer. 4' wide, 24' long, 6" high. The width is enough to comfortably reach half way across and 24' is short enough get around to the other side.

They are constructed from 3/8 plywood (painted) and pressure treated 2x2 posts. It's not the most rigid construction, but it is working ok. Long term we want a more rigid setup, but it wasn't in the budget.

Irrigation is very important on a raised bed since they will dry out before the ground around it. Good luck.

I like Mathias' dimensions.

My beds, so far, are just "dumped there." I don't have good soil where I have a lot of sun, so I built them by putting a big old mound of manure in the middle, and taking soil I had screened the year before and shoveling over the top :)

I was considering making a nice looking raised bed to grown daylillies in that I wanted to look nice. Cheapest material I could find was used brick on Craigslist for 10 cents a piece. I wanted that bed fairly high, about 18-24". Figured roughly 12' x 28" x 6 bricks high = 204 bricks, or $20.40.

Here's what you need to make those raised beds. Hal
