IH 544 Diesel water in oil?

I just went to check out an IH 544 diesel tractor for sale. It looked a little rough but ran and operated quite well with a Woods MD-160 bush hog on the back. After approx. 30 minutes of running, a check of the fluids revealed a whitish pastiness and grayish/brown color oil on the dipstick. I'm thinking big problems and he's saying that it might be from water entering the exhaust from being outside. I'd appreciate any useful info --- thanks!

i wouldnt think so. I would suspect that is coolant possibly through a busted head or a blown gasket (try a compresion check), or the o-rings

The best way to find out would be to change the oil and run it for a few hours to see what the oil looks like... if they are serious about selling and you are serious about buying it shouldn't be a problem for either party.

Does it have an exhaust cap? When was the last oil change? Drain the oil into a clear container and let it sit for a day. It should seperate and you can see if it has water in it. Is the radiator low? 544 diesel is a good engine.

Let it sit for a day and crack the drain plug on the oil pan. Turn it out a few turns and water will come out before oil will. If the water is green bad news if its clear change the oil and run it. The german diesels are knowen for the sleeve orings to break down and leak. You have to tear down the engine to replace them. If its a Farmall row crop 544 they are quite rare with the diesel engine. I'd snap it up even if it needs an overhaul, very handy tractor.

Thanks for the replys gentlemen, we are going to work on the oil change and do some more investigating with the tips you all provided. He's looking to get $4,500 for the tractor with the bush hog and a loader (IH) w/a gravel bucket. The loader has been off the tractor for at least 5 years and he has no intention of putting it on for an op check. Any big scares to worry about with an unchecked loader? Thanks again.
