Is the exhaust pipe supposed to be horizontal or vertical on a Ford 541?

My Jubilee came with a horizontal exhaust, which I hated smelling the exhaust.
I think the vertical exhaust pipe I bought from YT was for a ford 541.

I converted my Ford from vertical to horizontal. Pictures of 541s on the web show both configurations.

I believe all the gas motors left the factory with horizontal exhaust that exited behind the rear axle.
The vertical exhaust parts were added in 1959 when the diesel first appeared.
But many of the gas engines have been converted to vertical using the diesel parts.

I could list pros and cons to both but using a 1950's train of thought gasoline fumes dumped right in your face would have been worse than diesel fumes so the gas engines used the exhaust that exit behind you and diesel was allowed to exit over the hood.

If you have low-hanging tree branches and a vertical exhaust, one of them will have to go. It is a self-correcting problem.
