Some work on the 1030

Had a few things to fix on the 1030. First was manifold gaskets. The manifold had a broken tab that needed to be fixed.

Drilling that hole was tough, that brass was hard. I've never had brazing get that hard before. Dulled several drill bits trying to get through.

Next was a leaking fuel tank. Had to remove the tab that holds the tank on to get to it.

That bracket is supposed to be welded to the cover plate onbthe tank that is put on intentionally loose to allow for flex, but the factory had burned through to the tank so when things moved it tore the tank. Then they soldered it more when trying to patch the tank which made things worse. I made sure it was done right so it should be good now.

Next was the hydraulic valve. One bank wouldn't re-center properly. The valve has a heat safety that will melt if things get too hot and that melted twice because the lever got left in the down position. When I had that apart I looked for the issue, expecting to fine a bad spring or something, but found nothing. So yesterday took it apart again looking for the issue.

Found one pin that pushed against the spool seamed soft. So I pulled the swivels off the outside looking for a broken spring. What I found was one spring in backward. This pick shows it correct.

You can see it's tapered, so when it was backward it went too deep into the fitting. Got it back together correct and it works good now.

Even put on a new muffler.

I will cut the bottom off so it goes down in the hood like it should. Hopefully that will be the last of the trips to the shop for that tractor for a while.

Why does it seem the 930 was a dependable durable tractor. And everybody I know that has had or still has a 1030 has had trouble with the engines in them. Was always something head gasket, sleeve piston, or something cracked like a cylinder or head. Was there just to much fuel or poor design on them causing these problems?

I've had a 1030 since 1972. I overhauled it once in 77. Had a cracked sleeve at the top flange as Case's forms for the block were getting old and the top flange wasn't true. Borrowed the tool to true it up and shim the sleeves...been good ever since. Put in one clutch in all those years and the last years have been as a loader tractor. I always respect the engines and treat them good...no cowboy to beat them to death.

Undersized radiator that caused the 1030 to run hotter under a full load compared to a 930CK?

1030 heads have larger valves which makes the space between more susceptible to cracking if they are shut down hot. And the radiator is barely large enough. But other than that they are about the same and the bad rep is mostly hearsay.

just 1 thing, when you lower muffler, extend it to at least top of the bent air intake cap. it will suck exhaust gasses into the air cleaner n thats no good

Unless your talking about turning up the fuel a lot, not sure how you cowboy to beat to death a diesel. I have 4 compact diesels, and when working them, run them at WOT with no adverse effects. They are: Kubotas; 1988, 1992, 2015 and JD; 2000.
