580 case wheel bolt repair

Neighbor. Just bought a 580 case backhoe two wheel drive and on the front hub three bolt holes for the wheel bolts are stripped out. Would you recommend time serts / heli coils to repair or other solution?

Thanks

From the article I just read on Partzilla the time sert would be better since the helicoil is considered a one time use deal versus the multiple times a wheel bolt will be screwed in and out for tire repair or changing. Now that being said if you wanted to I suppose you could drill the hub out a bit to hold a stud put in from the back side or as already said just use a longer wheel bolt with a nut on the back. His choice. I would guess.

I would try the timeserts, then after ten hours loosen the bolt and check that the threads are still good.

I like the stud idea. The holes are probably stripped out just right for studs, and a few studs would make aligning the tire on the hub less frustrating. Nothing makes you want to tear your hair out more than trying to hold up a 100+lb tire, and getting the holes to align so you can put in the first lug bolt.

That is the way I did wagon wheels while loaded on way to elevator while setting on side of road. Never any problems for years.

HeliCoil-type wound-wire inserts considered one-time-use hardware? Nonsense! Ok, the so-called locking wound-wire inserts are considered effective for five screw installations, but they loose their running torque, not their loadbearing capacity.

That said, and even though I'm not familiar with the specific wheel hub under discussion here, I would be inclined to use a key-locking or adhesive-bonded solid metal insert rather than a wound-wire insert.
