Ford 4000 with selectospeed

Recently purchased this Ford tractor for the loader and grapple bucket on it. Seller says it has transmission issues I am a Green guy
so know absolutley nothing about these selectospeed set ups. Looking for any advice on were to start looking, or how to diagnose what the
problem may actually be? I am picking it up tommorow morning and plan on winching it on the trailer. Is there any chance I could hurt
anything further in the trans by winching it on or can I just disengage clutch? Maybe I should pull Loader off and sell as is to a Ford
person, but maybe it could be something simple?? Thanks for any help/advice.

Transmission goes into Park when engine is not running.

Disconnect traction disconnect in order to tow.

Disconnect is on left if 4 cylinder, on right if 3 cylinder.

Well there are a few individuals that like them. but the ones that do have or experienced that transmission when it was working. A fine idea that Had problems from day one. If the loader can be adapted to a different Ford or Other brand easily, do that. Finding a buyer for the tractor not operating is a tough call. The engine and tires may be valued components worthy of parting out. Jim's opinion

A Select-O-Speed tractor does not have a conventional clutch. The inching pedal (where a clutch pedal would be) operates a hydraulic valve and does nothing if the engine isn't running. The traction disconnect unhooks the transmission from the differential and allows the rear wheels to turn freely.

There are two Ford 4000 models, the early have four cylinder engines, late have three cylinder engines. Late has the disconnect lever on right side, a hand lever. The early bolt on lever is on left side, on the upper side cover stud. Lever is removed and flipped end ways to turn the shift shaft and bolted back in place.

Select-O-Speed discussions/problems are a recurring theme on the Ford board. For familiarization/ideas on a specific problem try searching the archives.

You rotate it.....on the side of the differential casting over a round plate as I recall, lever about 6 long with a round ball cast into the end.....non SOS trannys have just a blank cover at that spot which is also used for access to the PTO coupling.......as I vaguely recall.

Thanks again for everyones help on this. Got it on the float and home this morning. Its an early 4 cylinder so like some said lever to disengage on left side. Did that and winched it on with no issues. Fellows widow said it ran about a year ago but would only go ahead no reverse? Thats about all she knew about it. I guess I will attempt to get it running and see what it does.

If, after evaluation, you decide to tackle the SOS, you will need the manual. The SOS supplement was included in my 1954-1964 Ford Tractor Service Manual but is also available as a standalone on Ebay and other places. Below is a sample of the title page and troubleshooting chart. It runs around 69 pages. With SOS you must think like a technician.

Thankyou for the info. I didnt get a chance to work on it today, but plan on tackling it tommmorow. Pages you posted will certainly help. Thanks again. Tom
