Obsolete Harvestore/Upright silos

Most of the tower silos around my area are no longer being used. Would imagine the ones around you are not being used as well. My question- do any of you have an unused tower silo and does it cost you anything annually in real estate taxes?

I have three Havestores I no longer use. Two 20x80s, and a 20x42. I talked to the County Assessor and they took them off my taxes. However I did lease one out for ten years to the local technology company and they installed wireless internet radios on it that feed internet to most of the farms and homes in my area. The farthest one is 11 miles away.

Mine haven't been used in the last 10 years. That's when I quit finishing my cattle out and started selling them as feeders. I haven't had any cattle for about 5 years now. They cost me a little in property tax but I doubt that I'll take them down. They kinda symbolize the farm as it always was - a dairy farm/cattle farm/now retired farmer farm.

NY state is the 'Land of Taxes'. But, to keep us alive, we farmers get many breaks. One of them is 'silos'. I took down the old tile silo that was here. My grain bins are considered 'silos' for property tax purposes- not assessed, not taxed.

(quoted from post at 11:55:07 11/21/23) As improbable as it sounds, some guy who lives about 5 miles from me converted his silo into a ''house''. Last I knew, we was still living in it.

Sounds like a creative use of space. Wonder if he built a curved framework or just squared off the inside? Must have gotten very good with a power saw making all the cuts.

I had never heard of Airbnb until last week and now that's the 3rd time since, guess I don't get to town often enough? LOL

My father in law took his down and when it fell the aluminum top just floated down. My wife wants to make some sort of a gazebo out of it. So far i have been able to avoid doing it.

You might be surprised at how much that flag will bring if it was on the ground. The plain blue panels are for sale on FB for $50.00 each.

Ah poverty monuments are what they are know by out here... seems like everyone that put em up was headed to bankruptcy court not to long after it..

I remember a Harvestore salesman asked me when we were going to modernize our farm with a Harvestore silo? I told him about 3 years before we go broke. He didnt think it was funny. I didnt either because I was serious.

Neighbor widow had her's removed about 3-4 years ago. It was starting to deteriate and she was afrain it was going to fall on the house. Yes, it was that close.

ours is still up and is still on the taxes. I think i can petition the county to drop is as it is obsolete and has not useful value. I would guess its only about $30ish per year but they don't need it.

Still has 6 feet of corn silage in it. Wife's grand-dad's last milk license was 1985 so I suspect that silage was put in in 85 or 86. nice crust of pigeon craap on top.

took an old granary down and need to get that off the books too.

on harvestores
there still alot of small/mid size dairies around here (they are getting fewer though) that still use them if they had them.

many other ex dairies are using them for grain storage now.

Have seen a few come down for scrap.

i thought they were easy to move compared to a concrete silo (have seen them moved too)
