Case 380 David Brown engine problem

My Case 380 David Brown engine (diesel) slows down and looses power after running for about 5 minutes. I have changed the fuel filters, fuel pump and check the inlet fuel line to the oilfield pump.
I drained the fuel tank and looked inside and it is really clean. Disconnected the fuel line at the fuel pump and blew back and it s free.

When the engine slows down to about 1200 rpms, I can turn it off and let it sit for just a few minutes and start it right up and run again for about 5 minutes and slow down again.

Anyone experience this or any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Will it keep running if you manually use the priming lever?

If so, check the push rod that is behind the lift pump. I would bet the ends are worn enough to not actuate the pump.

Is the fuel filter a WIX/NAPA? And was the common mistake made of placing an O ring in the filter TOP OUTER groove next to the lip? If so that O ring needs removed, as that groove is the fuel inlet on that type filter, and must remain open. Many service calls made to correct that mistake..

The filters are fil aftermarket filters. I do have the o-rings installed in the outer groove. I cAn pull them out, but wouldn t the filters leak without them?

when the engine slows down I have tried to pump the fuel pump manually but it doesn t speed back up. I may not have pumped it enough. I am willing to replace the fuel pump rod as that is an easy fix or at least inexpensive one to try. Question is where would one go to get a replacement rod?

Thanks

While the Wix/NAPA type element is most likely to give a problem with fuel delivery; regardless of the type of element top, if you put the gaskets inside the rim of the filter element, remove them from there and put them in the housing where they should be. If the old gaskets are still in the housing grooves, they are likely why it is not leaking. The photo on line I found of the FIL 101 shows the CAV type top, with the holes. Is that correct?

(quoted from post at 11:22:47 10/29/19) Filters are sealed at the top lip, by the BASE groove O ring.

Base, Housing, Filter Head -- same part, different names -- in any case we agree on gasket placement and have seen issues when the gaskets are in the wrong place.

The CAV filter top has the holes. Both CAV and WIX/NAPA filters come with extra O rings, on both the LARGEST goes up in the base groove and slightly smaller on the lower part of filter.

Okay it s not the fuel cap. It s weird, it will run fine lots of power and then engine starts slowing down to 1000rpms. It will continue to idle at 1000 and when I lower the throttle it will sit there idling. If I try to raise the rpms, noting happens. Turn off and just wait a few seconds it will start right up and I can throttle up to 2500 rpms.

If the fuel line comes out of the top of the tank like on my David Brown tractors there may be a crack in the fuel line sucking just a bit of air.I solved the fuel problem on
my DB 885 by running the fuel to the pump out of the drain hole in the bottom of the tank.

Hello Stiles welcome to YT! Ii is very unlikely you will get a reply from poster UncleJack. The 4 posts you see here from Oct. 2019 is all he ever posted here. Just the way things work here you will likely have a better response from if you start you own ..New.. post. Describe what the symptoms are of the problem you are having. Even though this is a common problem not really brand specific I would also suggest posting it on the ..YT Case and David Brown.. forum. I am placing a link to it to make it easy for you.
