Just a little south of where I was raised. We used to go there for Basketball and hockey games. Thriving community back in those days. We would always have a car full when we went so it was party time for a young guy like me, and we would always have to stop in at a restaurant to finish off the evening. Lots of old steam engines around when I was young and have many memories of thrashing days.

Gee, Rod, you must be older than me. I remember binding and threshing days as Dad and an uncle owned a Case thresher and we would thresh oats mostly. I was too young to pitch bundles but did get to drive the tractor on the wagon going from shock to shock gathering bundles to take to the thresher. They usually used uncle's Case DC tractor on the belt, no steam engines. Also remember going with dad to gather the bundles and put them into shocks. I did drive the tractor on the neighbors binder one time. Wherever did they get the term shock???

Etymology tells us that shock might be traced back to Germanic/ Dutch/ Saxon roots meaning group of sixty. Also referenced the connection to old English meaning thrown together. Also know as a stook in other addresses.

Shocking was fun...NOT! Would forget which shock I set the water jug under. Would wear out a new pair of leather gloves each season..avoiding dry Canadian thistles. Pretty lonesome job unless you saw a snake scooting away. But the threshing dinners were worth it! Leo
