Any Reason to Plumb Hydraulics as Double Acting

Just pulled a IH disk and a Harrogator out of a fence row this weekend. All the hydraulic hoses are pretty poor. Is there any reason to plumb these as double acting with two hoses or am I fine just venting the rod size and running a single hose?

If you hook it up with a single hose and the cylinder leaks internally it will push oil out the vent on the rod end. If you hook it up with two hoses and the cylinder leaks internally it will just leak down.

Don't throw your money on something that you don't need. Single acting is fine on either of those implements.

Depends what tractor you have. Older IHC andAC only had one way hydraulics. Olivers need adjustments to work one way. It would help to know what tractor you have.

As others said, if plumbed single acting, any oil getting past the piston seal will get blown out the vent.

If the cost of lines is your main issue, try Surplus Center's premade lines. I bought a bunch for an old 3500 Ford I've got, and saved big money over getting them made locally.

Like others have said, you'll get oil out the breather if the piston and/or barrel aren't perfect. On my JD 45 loader the cylinders are one way. Even though they're not "bad" I still get a little bit of oil past the pistons and if I raise the loader all the way up I loose a little bit of oil out the breathers. I know the cylinder barrels aren't in perfect shape so for me a little bit of leak by will always be there if I raise the loader up all the way.

On a disk I often like a little more down pressure, 2 way I can often lift the wheels up and add their weight to the disk, if it works that way on that model Id want 2 way.

Never really knew what a harrow Gator was, I cant see such a thing working in our wet clay ground with crop residue in the ground, guess that is why Ive never seen one! Not saying its a bad implement at all, just that its not for my conditions it seems.

Most farm stores sell hydraulic hoses also. though they will be in Pipe thread they usually also have adapters to fit nmotst of the common other threads. I have done that when I needed a hose in the field on Sunday.

For future reference, Discount Hydraulic Hose is competitive with Surplus Center but they don't soak you quite as bad on shipping. They also have every British, Japanese, and Matric fitting known to man.
