What was the problem with the JD 9400 combine engine?

Help me learn more about the Deere 9400 combine and the crankshaft/harmonic balancer - pulley issue. I know this was only an issue with the small engine equipped combines. Are all of the 9400 small engines going to eventually fail? One guy who was a John Deere service tech told me it happened within minutes on a brand new just delivered Deere 9400. What causes this? Was there not enough crank sticking out of the engine? Too many pulleys hanging out there? Not large enough diameter? I am asking as I would consider buying a Deere 9400 combine. If the crank goes what does the repair cost? Thanks for the information.

I'm not saying that it never happens but I have never heard of one failing next to new. Maybe a factory foul up when that particular one got built. A chronic problem with that engine I have never heard about. A step down in power from the earlier equipped 7.6L engines yes. That I have been told by guys who have owned both versions of the 9400.

When buying combines buy bigger than you think you need. I have never heard anybody say their combine was to big. Sort of like tractors never heard anybody say theirs was to big either. I would buy the biggest combine I could afford if it was me. Just can't get done fast enough and we are behind by weeks due to weather right now. With only 50 acres cut and over 300 to go yet. Rained yesterday and will be clear today then rain the next the a few clear days again. Would like to get the corn done too. Don't know about the crank problem though around here the 9500 is the smaller machine I see. Don't recall seeing a 9400 around here. 6600 was about as small as we see if you see anything older than the 100 series.

I'm thinking that if it was such a chronic problem, the John Deere service tech should have been able to list more than one example, AND answer all your questions about cost to fix, etc..

So many times, people will form an opinion based on ONE failure. "The balancer failed on this one combine, they're all junk!"

The earlier ones with the 359 engine were more problematic from what I understand. The later ones with the 414 were fine. I suspect the 359 was just wound a bit tight in that application.
Beyond that... unless you find a barn burner of a deal on a 9400 I'd go with a 9500 at a minimum. You'll get much the same machine with more separation and cleaning capacity. And a lot more of them out there when you need parts.

There were a lot of belts hung off that front balancer, and that was the issue. I believe there was an update, but involved changing the crank ??
