47 JD B runs strong then blows black smoke and stalls

I have a 1947 john Deere B that I got running, it runs really strong but sometimes it randomly starts to die and blows alot of black smoke, and last time it did this I noticed it was spraying unburned gas out of the petcocks under the block, I'm wondering if it's because the choke valve on the carburetor sometimes closes and dumps gas in the cylinder causing it to somewhat flood and shoot black smoke. If thats right can someone tell me how to get the carburetor choke valve to stop doing that, if that's not the case then can someone tell me why the tractor is doing that. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Two thoughts. If the choke valve mechanism is loose and can close with little or no effort, it could be the issue. The second thought is that there could be particles of rust or trash getting into the needle and seat in the carb. this can cause the the needle to be wedged open allowing excess fuel to flood the carburetor. If this screen (see link) around the fuel inlet fitting is in
good condition it should keep everything out of the
float needle valve and allow it to function properly.
However, a if there is a lot of powdery rust mixed in the
fuel stream this strainer can become overwhelmed and
to much crud will get in the float needle and it can and
will cause problems. Check this screen. Of course the
sediment bowl under the tank which also should have a
screen is the 1st line of defense.

not saying this is your problem but i have had the floats with pin holes in them just from being old and sitting around not used. the
tractor will start and run then the float gets heavy and then the tractor if puffing black smoke just as you say. pull the carb and give it
a cleaning and check the float.

Recently had similar problems with several tractors and determined that I had received a load of bad gas. Not sure what was wrong with the gas,but after draining the bad gas, replacing it and adding fuel system cleaner the tractors finely are running OK. Several neighbors has the same problem.

You probably don't need to open the petcocks on a B. The B is not that hard to start. Rustred has some good advice about the float not floating. Check it out.
