Snubs out in road gear only

Hello,

I recently re did the head gasket and valves on my 45 Case SC. It starts right up and runs well. Today I took it for its first drive after the repair and when I go to release the clutch in road gear it wants to snub out. This only happens in road gear. I know I still have to fine tune the carburetor. Could that be the cause? Before i tore it down everything worked as should! Thank you

The load placed on it is much greater in road gear. Snubs is vague as to what is happening. If it abruptly quits as the governor opens it is more likely a fuel adjustment issue. if it just lacks power and falls slowly into stopping, it is more likely timing. Jim

When releasing the clutch it will start chugging into a stall. But once the clutch is engaged the motor will come back and run smooth. So it could be the main jet screw and the fuel mixture screw to play with once at temp? Or could it be flow from the tank to the carburetor? Thank you

Most tractor carburetors have a plug in the bottom of the fuel bowl. using a clean can or plastic pail to catch fuel, open this plug and see how much fuel comes out. it should flow fast at first, then some slower, but steady for a minute. the steady flow should be an eighth inch or equal. if it floes to much less, then there is a restriction in the lines, or needle and seat. Check next at the intrance to the carb. then at the sediment bowl, then with the sediment bowl class removed. Jim

Don't feel alone, I never heard of snubs out either and no plans to add it to my vocabulary.

That would leave you with the valve adjustments , if it was all good before. Are they set to specification and correctly? A properly tuned up tractor will start out in high gear easily. Wont the first time here where the head was removed and the valve setting left alone.

You may need to drill out the main jet orifice in the carburetor. You will need a set of numbered drill bits. We had this problem on a tractor running a silage mixer. We burned out an exhaust valve by too lean of a mixture. When you use ethanol fuel the engine needs a larger volume to run at the correct mixture. Running too lean will cause the engine to falter, or your term snub out.

valves set via feeler guage with ec=very piston at tdc? if any doubt check them THEN SCREW WITH CARB . seen many heads removed new gaskets no valve adjustment n run ok no load but load hits it falters dies out lack of power. everybody blames the carburater first stab.if it pulled ok under load id save carb till after valves were set. reason number 1 not all pushrods are same length and rare anybody got same 1s in same hole as where they were at the beginning.
never mind what i say though

If you'er in a colder climate I would run it around with a fed sack over the radiator to help with a faster warmup then adjust the valves and try it again since the head was off. If no better then look into the fuel issue if it persists. Could also try the choke slightly on to see if it makes a difference if not then not a fuel issue.
