Weld through primer

I have a long term project I am working on. It involves welding sheet metal on a motorcycle sidecar. By the time I get some parts clean enough to weld,
my tractor work interferes with my project, and the metal gets a coat of light rust. I see there is a primer I can paint on the metal, called weld
through primer. Anyone used it? How did it work for you? If it worked what brnd did you use? Stan
 
I have not used it as in applying it, but I have used steel tube that was pre-primed with it and it TIG welded just fine.
 
Why not just prime it and when you're ready to weld hit the edge with a flap disk? Probably take less than a minute to have it ready to weld.
 
What M-Man said x 2. Get that metal primed when metal gets clean. Hit it with a disk or wire brush in a drill where you intend to weld. No special primer needed if done that way, and your likely going to re-spray the welding areas after the welding anyways.
 


used it a lot on a car project for protection for interior metal which I wouldn't be able to paint after such as a rocker panel. I can't tell you what it looks like now. I can tell you that the arc starts a little harder.
 
You can weld through any paint however the weld would be better if it wasn't contaminated with paint materials. I think the weld through primer is just another gimmic.
 
stan, we use weld thru primers on all our structural welded repairs at my body shop. you need to eliminate any corrosion at repaired areas. we use sem 40773 zinc weld or sem 40783 copper weld thru primer. both in aerosol cans. sem has utube videos on how it properly apply it.
 
If I remember correctly the guys doing body work on my antique truck coated the bare metal with WD40. If it sat longer just sprayed it again.
 
stan if the metal is going to sit bare , coat it with ppg omni mp170 primer. that will stop corrosion. 170 is a value line epoxy primer with good corrosion resistance. when you are ready to weld, sand back the 170 and apply your weld thru primer.
