Steamers: I love those big quiet beasts.

Saw the parade of steamers at Heritage Park by Forest City, Iowa some years ago. More steamers than I had ever seen together... it was fantastic.

I dont know the reason why but their construction is fundamentally different from North American engines. The cylinder block is fitted over an opening in the boiler barrel and acts like a steam dome. The throttle valve (regulator) and the safety valve are usually incorporated directly into this cylinder block. The block has to be mounted on the top of the boiler and so they are center crank. Also no clutch is used in the drive line, just sliding gears. Most were two speed although quite a few were three speed.
