Questtion for the plow experts

Was at an auction today with Tgrasher and we noticed this plow with chains just ahead of the moldboards. The chains show lots of wear so it had been used this way but we couldn't figure out what the purpose of them would be. Has anyone done that before or know the purpose of them?

They drag along and help bury tall grass and weeds. #9 wire has also been used for that purpose.

#9 wire used a lot in the past.

Dad had some bundles of used copper overhead wire, is that pure copper or an alloy, anyhow since it was laying there free to him, he used that.

Used before the introduction of trash covers. We never used them but sometimes the wheat stubble and threshed straw was so heavy that plugging was a problem. Remember back in the 50's riding the plow to keep the trash moving so as not to plug the plow.
The trash covers were a great idea as it also helped alleviate the problem of plugging the old drag spring tooth harrow which was used following the plow. Just a few days ago I saw a tractor and field cultivator sitting near the road and the cultivator was plugged solid with trash. Can't imagine what the guy was working to cause that.

We fastened the wire to a coulter shank and cannot see how a chain would ever work as every link would grab and collect-hold the trash and make pluging there. After we cot the Yetter coulters pluging problems went away.
