Air compressor oil

I have a mills 2 stage(2 cylinder)air compressor powered by a 5hp electric motor.the compressor is heavy cast iron.what kind of oil should I use in it?a heavy engine oil or gear oil?

I would think a regular compressor oil. Usually a 20 weight non detergent.

20wt or 30wt non detergent.

I agree.
Also, rrman, make a notation on your calendar to change it pretty frequently. Depending on use, maybe even 2x year.

I spent 22 years owning a tire shop. Please use Air Compressor oil in it. We used to get it at NAPA or American Auto Parts. It has non foaming additives in it along with additives to keep our air compressors operating properly.

I use Ingersoll Rand All Season Select Synthetic Lubricant, its not cheap.

You can buy oil that is labeled Air Compressor Oil but basically all it is is 30 weight non-detergent oil. The detergent in engine oil tends to foam in an air compressor.

rrman61 , A GOOD QUALITY 30 wt non detergent will work great.Keep it changed often and best to use a regular maintenance schedule to keep things in tip top shape.
