1908 Renault truck converted to carry shooting parties around an estate, in the 1920's. This was owned by my boss in the 1960's when this picture was taken. The service van in the picture is a 1954 Commer Cob pickup that we used when servicing Nuffield tractors.

Renault is an interesting study in how to exist. Theyve approached existence differently than say FIAT. Have you ever heard anybody proudly say they own a Renault. Domestically they are remembered for Le Car, AMC Alliance, and the Allis Chalmers 160.

With a name like "Commer Cob" I had to dig deeper. Did you also use the van version? Looks like a neat little truck.

I like the space-age air cleaner atop the engine. Flying saucer design.

For the comment about Renaults, I've rented a Dacia Duster a few times in Iceland. Derived from or made entirely by Renault, it's a very capable 4X4 SUV with 6-speed manual and turbo diesel. Good for light off-road chores and plenty of power.

Yes, we also had a Commer Cob van with the side valve engine. Our family car was a 1954 Hillman Minx
which was the car version. Unfortunately I wrote it off when a car overtook me and hit the back of a
lorry in front of me and I could not stop in time. I also had a 1934 Hillman Minx and the engine was
nearly the same in all of them. Not high speed but very comfortable for the time.

WE sold quite a few of the car in the background, a Renault Dauphine with a rear mounted engine. Had a confusing layout of fillers under the rear bonnet. Our petrol, salesman once filled a radiator with petrol when filling a customers tank.

Sounds like the local mechanic here who put over 15 quarts of oil in my gas engine because he thought it was a diesel. Hope your customer got it straightened out before his engine went up in flames.

Odd how some old cars achieve "cult status" while others just fade away or pop up from time to time as an oddity. The Citroen 2CV is one such example, prices just keep climbing here in the USA.

I came across this strange engine from Commer--the "Commer Knocker" is its nickname. I can think of better things to call an engine. Opposed 2 cylinder motor but pistons share the same cylinder, meet at the top of the stroke.
