John Deere generator

I need help on finding out what my JD 3 cylinder engine is, it's a military issue from the early to late 60's to mid 70's the model # or the serial # tag is gone from engine but for sure it's a John Deere according to th ex-owner. That's one issue the other is it's been sitting without fuel for about 9 to 10 years, will start with starting fluid, I'm having no luck trying to bled air, not for sure if it's the fuel transfer pump with a primer level are injection pump or a combination of problems, trying to keep from spending a fortune getting the Stanadyn JDB-2406 pump rebuilt. It's a 25 kw generator and will be a standby power for my house. Does anybody have any ideals? Thanks in advance for any advice. Would it be better to try to sell it or put more money in it, or list it somewhere for sale.

Setting that long unused I'll bet the injection pump has several stuck internal parts. I repair several pumps each month in that condition, where a complete tear down
and cleaning is needed to hopefully get them working again.

I see your from Indiana, what's your charge for going through it, down here the one shop I talked with said cost would start around 900 and could be up to around 1,500 maybe a little more. I'm attempting to tear into myself, I'm capable of doing myself maybe, just would have to get help from a you tube, and take my time, and put it back together like it came off. Anything to save me money since I'm on SS only. Thanks for reply!

OK here is an 80 year old man,s advise for whatever it is worth , you do as you please...BUT a u-<>tube video is a long way from experience. first of all it takes a few special tools but a LOT of <>experience to tear that pump down and know what to use and what is bad. Do not know how many folks <>I have seen over the years junk a pump from thinking they could do it. I am in no way connected to <>dieseltech but I can tell you that would be your best bet if you ever plan on getting this engine <>running. Used pull off injection pumps from say an engine like that running and went down bring
$750+ just as fast as junk yards can find them. Again just free advise

Thanks JM, I respect what your saying, I know it's worth more running than not, halfway decided before I get to deep on this project, probably going try to sell it cheap to get some of my investment back. I got plenty of time and not much money. Thanks for your comment.

sounds like it might be the same engine my 1969 JD 350 dozer had. Same engine was in the JD 1010 dozer & the JD 1020 farm tractor.

if you never been in a pump best send it to dieseltech. i can work on them .but i
dont do it for others.if i screw up its on me. while your at it the injectors could
use some tlc.drain fuel tank be sure its clean blow all lines out while its away.
if you do remove the pump first ting is make sure its timed to number 1
piston, making sure timing marks are lines up

1010 John Deere engine was not the same engine as the 350 and 1020. The 1010 has 4 cylinders and the sleeve deck, the others are 3 cylinders with individual wet sleeves.

If it is a 300 series Dubuque engine . It may not be worth repairing the injection pump . As the rings and piston ring lands may now be cracked from being hammered with ether detonation .

The JDB 2406 pump is ORIGINALY for the JD 1520 tractor. It would not be right for genset use unless some internal pump parts are changed for close speed control like
gensets use. It MIGHT already have those parts installed, can't be sure until it's looked at.

ell it was military issue and was being used 7 or 8 years ago. Was replaced with a generic, then it wasn t used anymore, that s when I gained possession from owner and he cannot remember any details. And the nameplate on the engine is no gone. No ideal other than it s for sure John Deere but model unknown and year early 60 sr 70 s
