Dug Potatoes

Rain showers most of the week so no harvesting in the fields but I did manage to finish digging potatoes between showers. Not a bad crop but not as many as most
years. Ground surface was damp but underneath it was dry. So thats the last garden update for the year in this video.

potato digging

We always used a 5 tine manure fork for tater digging. Worked pretty well with few damaged. As kids wanting to help we would spear a few sometimes, after we got the hang of it we didn't do it to often.

I just use a regular long handled shovel. Dig one side then another just outside the row. Still slice a few, but very few. The other nice thing about doing it this way is that I get non-fat potatoes. Cause by the time I plant, hill, weed, and dig them, there is not any fat left in them. At least for me.

I've dug potatoes for many years and the hoe method is the one that seems to work best for me. I have an actual 4 tine potato fork but found I speared a few or broke them right in half. Pitch fork, manure fork, same thing. With the hoe I might scrape the skin off one sometimes but its superficial damage and does not affect the storage.
