JD 630 Start Issue?

Have a John Deere 1959 630 that when you hit the start button absolutely nothing happens. 3 weeks ago and previous since I bought it in 2000 has not once had an issue. If you turn the lights on they dim when the starter button is pushed. But again no sound whatsoever. Took the hood off, & checked all the wires for rodent damage. None visible.

Is this likely the starter, or the start button, or other?

Thanks to those who respond!

The starter could be jammed in the ring gear. TO see if it is loosen the starter (just 3 full turns per bolt) and wiggle it. If it makes a snapping noise when becoming loose or does that when wiggled, that is the issue. it may start doing that more and more often. A new starter drive is needed. If that is not the issue, the starter may be shorted internally. Jim

Have u checked battery cables. Once they sit on a battery connected for long periods thats one symptom. Remove and clean. Had that happen many times.

or put in neutral engage clutch rock belt pully or jack up rear wheel engage clutch remove coil wire. put in 6th gear rock rear wheel listen for a distinct CLICK . about every year my 630 does that. time to send starter to repair shop for rebuild .brass bushings are getting worn letting it jam in flywheel

When checking through everything . Ensure the distributor s mechanical advance works .
Too often the mechanism becomes stuck at full advance . Then while cranking with the starter . The spark occurs too soon and causes the engine to kick back into the starter . Sooner or later something starter related becomes damaged .
Your tractor s problem could be low voltage . Due to a failed battery, rotten cables or a dirty connection .
