case 1370 and case 2294 reliability?

I have the opportunity to purchase a case 1370 in white sheet metal that is in very nice condition. Catch is its been sitting for probably 10 plus years. But heres another catch, this tractor was purchased with a blown engine right around the time the case 2294s were a newer tractor, it has an engine pulled from a 2294 that had a cab fire and was totaled in the 90s. Im told the engine has less than 1000 hours and it looks like it. During the engine transplant the powershift was done too. Shortly after he quit farming. This man is very mechanically able and I trust the repairs were done correctly. How reliable were the late 2294 engines and how were the white J.I. Case 1370s

Good tractors in their day, but age is hard on tractors. The tractor is 45 to almost 50 years old and the new 2294 engine is already 35 to 40 years old. Odds are that the coolant and other fluids were not changed before it went into the 10 years of storage. Check the condition of the tires, especially if it has duals or fluid, they might have plenty of tread but be poor inside. It might be OK as a backup tractor, but if it will be used heavily I would have some funds available for a major repair or two.

While I have never liked Case tractors,I must admit they were good. I ran a 2590 a fair amount in 2018.It had a bazillion hours and the trans mission was starting to slip. BUT,It was a powerhouse. Pulled like a locomotive, and just sipped the fuel. There are quite a few Case tractors still out there, they all seem to be good trouble free tractors.I wouldn't be scared of it.

I have a 2394 and 12000 hrs. Great tractor that I think I changed the oil every other year. Gets maybe 40 hrs a year on it the last 10. Almost the same as sitting. I wouldnt be scared of that 1370 if it runs and drives good.

if the 1370 was cared for its prolly ok. i had a 1370 and was a tough heavy workhorse.
the farm i rented ,the owner quit milking but he had other land. we put up silage together. he had a 4440 and 4555 jd. that 1370 held its own against them but burned less fuel too

The 1370/2390 were very good reliable tractors and pretty decent on fuel. They may be the most under rated tractors ever built as they were rated at 150 hp or so but most put out closer 200 from the factory. They were a big horse in the day. As long as you don't put cheap oil in the transmission they last a long time too. That 2294 engine is basically the same with just different injectors. It will be even more fuel efficient than the 1370 engine was. They only have 1000 rpm pto tho. If you get it ask again here and I'll pass along a few pointers on running them that will help get you used to it.

They are getting old as said, and the most common engine issue is the o-rings on the sleeves failing so water gets in the pan. So when you go look at it if it hasn't been started Crack the drain plug and check for antifreeze. If it's as low on hours as it says even if it is leaking it's not a bad jo to fix that, just a gasket kit and pull the sleeves and install new o-rings.

I have both, I have a 1570 that mainly now used to plant with but used for tillage in years back, not had much problem with it beside hyd lines that need replaced and stuff like that. also have a 3594 that I used some this year but I bought with problems going into this deal, the prior owner maintenance left something to be desired. I got the 3594 to replace a 2470 case tractor that I had for close to 20 years with little problem on that one also. main reason I got the 3594 was more horsepower. so far I not had problems getting parts for anything I need really so far, so i am not gun shy of what you are asking. good luck.

Very few tractors are "unreliable" when brand new. Obviously this tractor is far from new. Even the 94 series is 40 years old. Obviously how the tractor was used and cared for in those 40 years are huge factors in its current reliability. Babied and maintained, or flogged and neglected... big swing there.

Keep in mind that tractors don't often get parked for no reason, and memories fade...

If you are confident in the mechanical work that was done to this tractor, and the use it got after the work, then it should serve you well.

The 1370 has a large crankshaft 504 with piston cooling jets. The 2294 has a small crankshaft 504 with no cooling jets. If you want 200 horsepower dont buy it. If you can live with 160 horsepower it will be ok. Stan
