I pressed the old U-joint yokes onto new ''profile'' PTO tubing to replace the tubes that had be twisted by a customer who over-tightened the slip clutches on a John Deere batwing rotary cutter using a hollow hydraulic ''porta power'' cylinder and a length of 3/4'' ''all thread''.

This a a Euro ''Waltersheid'' star-shaped driveline.

It went quite well, to my surprise.

You can see the twist in the cutoff ends that were pressed out of the joint yokes.

First, I had to machine an area at the end of the tube to accept the round ''ring'' that supports the safety shield.

(The blue extension cord was NOT present during the actual operation of the lathe !)

It is tractor-related because the ''4430'' that pulls it is also in the shop for the repair of numerous hydraulic leaks.

hi wore out,

nice job. i have a 'champion' 16" lathe from the 1920's that i rebuilt.

i might have a brand new, in the crate, south bend cross slide with lg dial, handle and lead screw for that lathe. i picked it up from a local salvage guy for a project never completed and will probably never use it. i don't have the specs immediately handy but i think it was for a 13"-16" sb lathe.

Thanks, rio4000.

My lathe is an 18'', IIRC.

hadn't thought about this in decades! dug it outta the back back room. very pretty tool! the box was shipped by sb to raytheon in oxnard, ca. no date. the threads on the lead screw measure 10" .... so too short. maybe a 9" lathe or something custom for raytheon. among too many other things, i was plotting a vertical milling adapter for the old champion lathe. got a couple of mills since then.
