Death by a thousand cuts?

I grouted the tile in this shower surround today.
Did this kind of work for 30+ years before retiring 2 years ago.
Normally I could lay up the tile for a typical tub/shower like this in maybe 10 hours - depending on the tile.
I have 36 hours in this darned job.
I didn't want to do it.
Gave the woman the names of two other tile setters I know.
They wouldn't touch it.
Customer is my wife's best friend's daughter.
It HAD to be This tile and it HAD to be set this way.
I set some conditions.
4 hour work days and NO promises that I could hold 3/32'' grout lines through out.
It took me 2 weeks.
I thought about that old Chinese form of torture as I did this.
There wasn't a 1000 cuts but there was most of 400 cuts - many of them twice.
I will go back on Monday to caulk and install the faucet trim parts.
Then I'm gonna go up to my land and fart around on my tractors for a few days.
Clear some brush for deer hunting, etc.

I've done my share of tiling over the years ..... I don't think I would want to tackle that job. Nice work .... beautiful !!!

The way the tile guys get out of those jobs is to say 'Oh, that's not the style anymore! Nobody uses small tiles any more. You want to use BIG TILES! If you use those little tiles everybody will say your bathroom is DATED. You don't want to have THAT, do you?'

i can agree with you.i laid square tiles in 2 floors to please the chief cook n bottle washer. my knees are going bad slowly. i use an old pillow n still hurt. 1 day job took me 5 days plus my daughter handing me what i needed. next day i did like you messed with my big 411 case n got relief

You did a fine job !
Just the layout would have stopped a lot of guys.
Hope the saw was in the bathroom, or you should charge travel time

Two cuts to get it right is a lot better than one wrong one.My dad used to do a lot of tile work, but he never liked it.A friend does intricate stuff like that, but he gave it up.He says too many people want custom work for mass production prices. He could do restoration work, and it pays well, but involves a lot of travel and odd hours. He's driving a dump truck now and is paid $34.per hour, gets health insurance and sits down to his supper at 5 every night.

A little more info.

Yes! People want mass production prices.
I told the lady this would be a hand made shower and hand made is expensive.
I did it on time + materials basis. No milking the job but no pressure to get it done under bid either.
The snap shot above loses some of its effect due to the lighting. The color is kind of a light green with a bit of gray. Nice color actually.
Tiles are 2x6''
Thanks to all for the nice replies.
