Land Pride mower gear box

The gear box on my Land Pride AT 2572 is always wet with oil. It collects grass clippings and looks terrible. There is not vent for the gear box. Should I, or could I add a vent? I would put a filter on the vent to keep dirt out. I use 90W gear lube which I believe is correct and it is at the correct level.

Here is a picture that didn't load in my original post.

I looked for parts diagrams for your model. It appears that two different gear boxes were used over the years. Neither looks like your
picture. One of the gear boxes in the diagrams had a vent while the other didn't.

Are there any identifying marks or numbers on your gearbox?

The vent would have to be above oil level. The one AT2572 gearbox shown on the diagrams had a vent on one the two bolt holes on the PTO
connection end of the gearbox.

Dealer error. Those at25 were shipped 5 to a rack up on their side. The gearbox has a plug in there
to prevent the fluid from draining out during shipping. Dealer was supposed to put the vented plug
in upon assembly of the unit. He had some flunky sitting them up that did not read the
instructions.

It's hard to see the fill plug on your gearbox. My Woods finish mower had a vented plug on the top of the box. If you do a search on breather
vents or vented plugs you will find lots of options. With some much stuff being made overseas you will need to be sure you get the right
threads on your replacement plug.

I have 2 land pride mowers for nearly 20 years. Use them both regularly. I have never had your problem. Maybe the oil level is too high and/or using the wrong type/weight of oil.

jm. most likely has the answer. I've seen those mowers stacked up like he describes almost every time I visit the dealer and, of course, they would have to have a solid
plug installed for shipping that would prevent them from losing oil when stacked up like that. Just get the correct plug and you'll be OK.

Jm, which hole does the vent go in? The one on top or the one on the side of the gear box. The plug on top has a sort of a dipstick welded on to it which I don't understand because there is a level check plug on the back right side of the gear box.
Thank you all for your input.

Looking on the internet a little further I found that Landpride has an online manual. What looks like your gearbox is shown on page 62. (826-
206C OMNI) It shows a vent (part number 826-497C) installed where I assume you have a level plug. If you do a search on the part number you
will find a number of suppliers wanting about $20.

Oh, I dont think you will want a vent at the level plug location. It will vent oil at some times. The vent should be high up, likely where you have the dipstick plug.

The level plug to which I was referring is about the only thing visible on the OP's picture. It is shown near the top of the gearbox (in what is actually the vent hole).

The oil level in gear boxes of this type is normally in a place where about one half of the lubricated gear will be in the oil. The operator's manual shows the actual level plug at approximately this height on page 19

Just to go off topic a little. I do not know about your vent situation and it does seem like you have a lot of accumulation on top. My problem was a little different and I solved it 100%. My lower seal was leaking pretty badly under the mower. It would be a huge job to get the blades off and get to the seal. After lots of searching, I found the solution. Get as much of the gear lube drained or siphoned as possible. Then fill the gearbox with John Deere Corn Head grease. Never leaked again. Good luck.

Here is a picture of the gear box all cleaned up so you get a better look at it. My apologies for not including this picture in my original post. I will order part numbers 31 and 32 per check breaks post.
Thank you all.

(quoted from post at 06:12:35 09/12/23) Ok, here is the cleaned up pic.

Apparently I am wrong. According to the manual TomIn posted, the rear plug (top left corner) is where your vent goes. See page 68 of the manual. Vent is called a Comer Vent. Your gear box is an OMNI but Land Pride is using a vent out of a Comer gearbox or one of similar style.

You probably need to reseal the top cover when you install the vent. If you continue to have problems, move the vent to the dipstick port and use the dipstick to check for oil level.

Looking at the parts manual link posted by TomIn, if you go to page 75 for other models using same box that upper left plug has four choices and revisions available between plugs or vents

The gearbox on mine failed and was replaced before I got it. The main seal was leaking slightly
when I bought it. It has a vent and I changed it over to corn head grease right away and have never
had to add more. BTW: Not saying yours has, but I've seen square fill plugs like that with a small
hole drilled in a flat side.
