Rusted steering wheel nut

The steering wheel nut on my old BR is rusted tight. Can I try an impact driver on it, or is there a chance I will shear off the
shaft? Any other ideas appreciated...

Use a SHARP chisel and split one of the nut flats, that's what I do to get them off with no shaft damage. Air chisel works best to mark the nut on one or more flats. I do that a lot on exhaust manifold stud nuts, easier to replace the nut than dealing with a broken stud.

If using the Dieseltech method, Bucking the opposite flat with a 2# hammer or piece of steel will help dramatically. If uou slice the flat as far as you can with a Dremel cutoff or die grinder, it will make the splitting much easier. Jim

I took the wheel off my A. The nut was OK and it came off the taper easily but I could not get the key out. Had to grind it flush to get the shaft out then drill and chisel for hours.
