Hauling head aches

I posted this morning about bring my 2 122 Chuck Wagons home. All went well until we got to Ames Iowa which was about half way in our trip home. Looked back to see lots of smoke and felt like an anchor had been dropped. The front spring hangers had broken off on both sides. The axle had shifted over and the tire was rubbing the trailer sides. We were close to a side road and pulled off. For some reason my 1 1/16 socket was missing and I needed a second jack and some blocks. Unhooked and went back an exit to Menards for the needed extras. Jacked the trailer up and removed the four tires from the front axle. The trailer has 12,000 lb axles so we decided to chain the front set up on both sides and come home. Had my sons dually pickup and the wagons weigh 4000 pounds each. Not ideal but we made it home. Sure was hot when I was working on it. The wife says she hopes it cures me of buying stuff so far away. Right now maybe but when the next have to have comes along........ Tom

What was the cause of the failure? (what did the hangers look like where fractured?) It might help me or others avoid that issue. Jim

They were not fresh breaks. The trailer is a Diamond C and they are supposed to be top of the line. Trailer is not real old and does not have a lot of miles on it. I was surprised at how light of metal the hangers were.

Wow. I have a Diamond C. Nice trailers. Maybe not as nice as I thought. Been happy with it so far. RB

Nothing worse then breaking down long way from home. That is what I dread the most going cross country. Never fails the tool you need you don't have. I'm glad you made it home. I looked at your picture of your load. That is a good load. It fits just right. Implements are always unique to haul. They sure are not like an easy tractor to haul. Now on to looking for the next find. Jason

Very happy you made it home safe. You can have 5 sockets sets and still need a different size. . My dad always joked It never breaks down in the shed or driveway.mounts and springs can go a nytime. This week ckecking the rear axle and mounts will be on the list.

Things like that are very nerve racking. It feels good to be home and off the road. Too many poor drivers out there for my liking these days.

Tom are you sure axles are Dexter. Dealer told me they use Lippert axles. I know I like the D C trailer will keep an eye on the spring hangers. Glad you could gett'r home. RB

Had something similar happen a long time ago, a long way away from home... Lost a bunch of leaf springs. A plank and a bunch of electrical tape got us home!!

Glad you got back safe, eventually.

I was expecting a picture of one of those wagons off the Mississippi bridge!

Broke at welds or the hanger metal itself at hanger/spring bolt?

Before fixing it, look up the recommended mounting location dimensions, bracket to bracket, front to back.

Are the front hangers reinforced or have additional support other than a square, bent u-shape bar stock??

Definitely contact the dealer the trailer came from before fixing it. It may still be under warranty, doing any work on it without authorization may void any future claims. Manufacturers famously do anything they can to avoid liability

their website only shows Lipperts for the 10 adn 12,000 lb axles.

not sure which is better. both are made around here. Dexter has been at it a long time. Surprised Lippert doesn't own Dexter yet as they seem to buy up everything RV or trailer related.
