1970 ford 8000

I am wanting to drain and replace the power steering fluid on tractor and wondering where you drain it from. The lines go from the pump down into the bottom of the tractor to a steering box. It sat for a couple years and is milky so I need to change it. Thanks

Go to the Ford Forum, further down on this page, and ask for Bern. He can answer that question better than anyone I know of.

NOt a ford guy but would hazard a guess you will need to remove the end of one line then run with new oil in there to purge the old oil out of the cylinder in the frame then reconnect and fill to level then probably need to recheck foe water in it again in a week or so just to make sure the system is free of water in the oil. There is probably also a filter in the reservoir if you take the top lid off it will be in there I have no idea what it is other than most likely it is a canister type filter. Most of those separate systems like that have one in there. Even my Peterbilt has one in the tank. I've changed it a few times with no water in the system.

My Ford 5000 had some water in the
power steering fluid. I remove the
canister off the power steering pump
and dumped all the fluid out and
changed the filter. I replaced the
reservoir canister and then unhooked
the return line to the pump. I just
put the return line over a 5 gallon
bucket. I had my son helping me and
he would turn the steering wheel back
and forth as I poured new fluid in
the power steering reservoir. I did
this until the power steering fluid
ran clean. I then hooked the return
line back up to the power steering
pump. I again remove the power
steering pump reservoir canister put
another new filter in it and filled
up the reservoir. It worked great.
Not sure that's how you're supposed
to do it but that's how I did it. My
power steering fluid is actually
automatic transmission fluid. I think
it took me a couple gallons of
running it through to flush it out
good.
