Fergy TO30 Burping Thermo-well

Couple questions about the thermo-well while awaiting my new gauge: The design seems insufficient to allow the heated coolant reach the bulb. When I removed the bulb from the well I placed it in some hot water and it reacted immediately, but when installed in the well it doesn't move off the peg, yet my IR pinpointer says the goose neck is about 160f.
Being about 3" long there is a small 1/4" hole in the end where it mates to the goose neck and it seems that the hole is so small that there is very little direct coolant contact with the bulb. I'm thinking about drilling the hole out to maybe 5/16" or 3/8" to see if it make a difference. Or maybe, when on first start after refilling, does the thermo-well need to be "burped" to let the air out?

Yes, I did that and it's seems clear as lots of coolant escaped. I'm pretty sure that the well gets air locked and maybe when it's running I can loosen the thermo bulb nut until coolant shoots out then maybe that will take care of it? The new gauge assy won't be here until Tues and I'll update results.
Thanks
