I have a 05 F 150 with a v6, and auto trans. The problem I have, is when I start the engine sometimes the starter doesn't engage the ring gear, on the
flex plate. The starter gear just grinds on the ring gear teeth. Could this be a starter gear problem, or ring gear teeth going bad, or a little of both?
Anyone had this problem? what was it? Stan

When you answered ..both.. that is probably your best answer. Change the starter drive gear. When you have it out look at the flywheel teeth, that will give you a pretty good idea how bad your flywheel teeth are. The new drive gear may make it work a couple years, but then if the flywheel is bad enough it may only last a week.

Chances would be in favor of bad ring gear teeth rather than bad starter teeth. Just my opinion. Easier of the the two is obviously the starter. You could start by taking it off, see what it looks like. And go from there.

Many years ago I had a Dodge 200 starter drive bump the starter ring.
So I used a die grinder and touched up the starter drive, made a sharper angel on the teeth. Worked fine.

Its not that uncommon of a problem, a new starter normally will get it down the road for a many a year and hopefully till Y'all part ways. What have you got to lose its gonna get a starter anyways just get a starter with a lifetime warranty life will be good.

Just replace the starter with a remanufactured one, or get a 100% new starter from RockAuto for less, and no core charge.

Nobody wastes their time replacing the drive on something that new.

I too, have an F150 and it had the sound of gear teeth grinding. I figured the ring gear was trash. When I pulled the starter, I was happy to find the ring gear in excellent condition. The starter drive clutch had failed. I installed a new NAPA starter, within a month the starter drive clutch failed. NAPA warrantied the starter, now all is good. My V6 auto trans F150 has 272K miles.

Had a similar issue with our Explorer Sport Trac. The starter mounting bolts had come loose, but it was getting good enough ground to work, tightened the bolts back up and no problems since. Hopefully you get that lucky too!
