TO20 Crank Pulley Removal

I'm trying to remove the crank pulley on my TO20 so I can replace it with one that I can bolt a hub to to drive a pump. the pulley is bolted with a bolt that's made to accept a hand crank.

How do I hold the pulley from spinning so I can loosen the bolt? With the tractor in gear it will still spin and move the tractor.

I've got the hood and radiator removed.

Use an impact wrench. No impact? Get someone on the
tractor holding the brakes in gear , if they work. Could
also block the rear wheels. Then hit the wrench or swing
handle with a ball peen hammer.

I think I'll try blocking the wheels. I've got an impact, but I don't want to take off the front end if I can help it.

Through gearing or in simple terms leverage, the
highest gear gives the wheels or brakes the best
advantage of holding the engine. If all else fails pulling
the starter and holding the flywheel teeth with a bar
will do it.

This may not apply to your problem so try at your own risk. From service note for an import designed small 4 wheel drive noted for leaking seal and gaskets of timing
cover. To remove crankshaft pulley, remove coil wire to disable ignition, place socket and breaker bar on bolt with breaker bar against left frame rail, bump starter,
bolt should be broke loose, on reassembly new star lock must be used.

just make sure you are trying to turn it in the direction counter to the way the crank would turn it. I've used the breaker bar and hammer method many times. It may take a couple of whacks. Fast and hard is best. Pad your radiator from damage, if it's still there. steve

That was my original idea. Unfortunately the socket is too large to fit through the axle pin and there isn't enough room to get it on in front of the nut.

Blocking the wheels didn't work, not sure if the block was too tall or what. Using the starter to break it loose worked great!
