Picture Of One Of My Feeler Gauge Set

I am going to help the neighbor with the head installation on his farm tractor. I took my feeler gauge set out and could not read one of the feelers. So I took the other too out, the lower and the higher reading.

How many times you have to use the same gauge size to wipe the laser markings out?

Never noticed it before,

Guido

Some are kinda dim, but in a certain light, visible. Measure it with a mic, then mark it with your engraver!! Jim

Janicholson,

I gather the tools I will need for tomorrow, my neighbor has my torque wrench. I took a second look at the feeler, in a certain light it's still visible.

I know what size it is; .015 and .017. Detroit Diesel exhaust valve settings.
Done a few of those 2 cycles screamers, 71 and 92 series,

Guido.

Richard G,

I have many sets, some are offset to get in where straight one don't work.I still have my points ignition set from the 60's. I said I never noticed before. When I got to the .014 to .016, I just opened the next one.

I wonder how many here own a set of go and no go gauges. Certainly fool proof for the novice. If 014 goes in and 016 won't you are @ .015, more o less

Guido.

I needed a set of those with the angled ends. Could not find any at the local auto parts stores. I actually found some at home depot tool isle !

Mike M.,

Mine offset gauges are from the 70's. Cummins engines of that time is what I used the on.

Funny to hear that you found them in a box store,

Guido.

Mine have had very little use since the 80s. I have 3 gas tractors that are used very little. Everything else is diesel

I've got some that are hard to read from rust or moisture spots on the blades. I just mic them if I have a doubt. Also have a set that say Caterpillar on them probably from when Grandpa bought the D-4. Also another set of some around here some place all have some blades that are not readable.

I have a set of go no go gauges my father had. Were for head space on a .50 caliber machine gun, from uncle Sam WW II. Tail gunner B-24 Italy. joe

Dad was a belly gunner in WWII on a B 24, 5th Army Air Force (McArthurs) Pacific theater

i learned to engrave each leaf when new. i got several LONG blade feeler guages to set cummins .cast iron rocker boxes set way diffrent from aluminum

Cant remember the last time I used mine on a car. Been a few years that they were used on my John Deere B. I dug them out two years ago to measure the valve clearance on my Tecumseh snow blower engine that didnt have much compression, leaking exhaust valve.

If.... they are that used... I would def mic them.. They are probably no longer near the original spec.

rwb,

I have some 6in. ones for liner to block clearance. It been decades since I used them.

We got some Cats and 92 series DD making up about 90% of the fleet,

SOME Mack International gas and diesel. and a V8 or two of the smaller Cummins.

Kept me busy,

Guido.
