555c ford backhoe getting hot under a load

when in gear , forward or reverse it feels like the brakes are dragging but when you put it in neutral it rolls nice and easy , engine gets hot when you push a little load , engine has about 20hr on a fresh rebuild , could the trans filter be stopped up , the trans oil looks very clean, seams to have the power to push a heavy load just feels like it is under a heavy load all the time .

IF the engine is getting hot I would look at the radiator and see if you can see a light through it or just flat blow it out or wash it out. Washing needs care not to bend the thin copper fins that let the air flow through and dissipate the heat to the air. Should cool it off if not then maybe low on coolant.

Did you own and operate it before the rebuild? Any history? Diesels as a rule tend to run much cooler than gas engines. When equipped with a fan clutch, which I know that yours is not, it takes some time under load to make the fan even engage. It sounds like it is getting a lot of driveline load that it should not have.

if you take it out of gear it rolls like it should , I am having the radiator rodded out to eliminate that, i did not own it before the rebuild, 1996 555c that sat for about 6-8 years and the engine had water in one cylinder due to the air filter being removed ,backhoe runs flawless but in drive it feels like I am pulling a load and little black smoke when throttled up when i drive .

If it exhibits the same symptoms with the rear wheels off the ground, and the wheels turn freely, I would say you have problems in the transmission, or cross leaks in the clutch control circuit, allowing one clutch to drag while the other is engaged. Cut the trans filter open; lot of metal, transmission rouble. Nothing noteworthy, blown gasket on control valve or seal ring on input shaft. Screw a new filter on and have someone do a pressure test. I think the engine heating up is a separate problem. If the trans was getting hot enough to heat the motor , the trans light on the console would be lit. Another possibility is that there may be nothing wrong with the power train at all. It may just feel doggy as a result from faulty overhaul. Low compression will make black smoke if you push it.

What gear do you have it in when trying to drive it, starting out in third or fourth is a heavier than first.
