Massey 12 knotter problems.

How do I get rid of this loop in the tail of the knot? The knot itself seems to be removed from the hook, but that loop is staying stuck between the jaws and sometimes the lower twine breaks instead of pulling it free. It has happened on both knotters with sisal and plastic twine. I've followed the adjustments in the manual from start to finish.
I'm thinking I need to make a knife adjustment so the twine is cut sooner in the cycle, but I'm not sure.

P.S. This is my first post, although I've read the forum before and found lots of good info in previous posts going back 15yrs. Thanks to all who have contributed to this wealth of knowledge.

A dull twine knife can cause this,, the knife needs to be sharp enough to cut the twine as soon as it engages it,,if it doesn't the knotter progresses with the twine tightening on the bill hook making it harder for the wiper arm to clean it off the bill hook.

I sharpened them on a vertical belt sander and then touched them up with a file. They are sharp enough to cut a fingernail lengthways with no effort at all. Ask me how I know!

I wonder if they've been sharpened so many times that the edge is't where it's supposed to be anymore. I had to use all of the adjustment slot to get them the specified distance from the twine disk. Because of the orientation of the slot, that would also retard the cutting action.
I wish I had a new one to compare them to.

Many years ago I owned a model 12 baler. I had the exact problem you are having. Replace your knife and adjust it. Should cure your problems.

(quoted from post at 09:17:00 07/23/23) My baler was doing the same loop in the
knot. It was the twine disk was not
adjusted correctly.

My manual refers to adjust the twine disk if there are "bows" in the knot. Is that what the loop is called? It's the one adjustment I skipped because the picture was really bad in the manual and it looked close enough.

I found a picture of a new one on-line. Mine look really worn down compared to a new one. I'll have to call tomorrow and see if they are available.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys!

Masseys use a bow tie knotter. They dont leave two cut tails like a John Deere or New Holland. Looks like your twine is breaking as it is pulled off the
bill hook. As mentioned, a dull knife or the bill hook not releasing. I can dig out my book tomorrow afternoon if you don.t figure it out.

Yes, the stripper arm isn't completely removing the knot. That bow is staying in between the jaws and then the lower twine breaks as the bale is pushed through.
I was able to watch it as somebody else rolled it through today. I took this pic just after the knife started to move. As the knot is pulled off, it's dragging one of the tails with it making that bow, which stays wrapped around the jaw. My stripper arms have grooves from the twine cut in them and I think the knot is getting caught in the grooves instead of being pulled off. The rollers also have a lot of wear on them so I don't think I'm getting the full stroke either. I'm done baking for a few months so I'm going to rebuild the stripper arms and go from their.
I appreciate the insight. If I'm overlooking something, let me know!

it could also be that the wiper arm is warn to where it is not swinging far enough..also check the lobe on the drive wheel for the wiper arm..
