DMV vehicle check ahead

I am traveling on a road I am on a lot. I am in my 2015 jeep Cherokee. I knew if I was pulled out of line, I wouldn't have a problem. I go right on by, but I did see some sort of portable scales. I think it was more for commercial vehicles. No doubt if I was in my 96 dodge 3500 and my trailer with my tractor I would be pulled right in. even though I have good tires, current registration, and the tractor has 4 chain binders on each corner. I am sure they would find something. Just today checked my breakaway battery, one terminal was broke. I sure this would be a ticket, so I was driving around with no trailer brake away brakes. I ordered a battery today. These checks are not real common where I live. What's it like in your area? Do they still check diesel fuel for red died diesel? Stan

Now days you just can't be too careful. Amazing how much one little missing e makes in a word. Stan

I usually get pulled into one about once a year up in British Columbia, Canada, Sometimes they check the fuel, usually just ask me if I'm running road diesel. They are always very polite, and friendly. Got a tire warning for low tread on a rear tire, during the big shut down, and were having trouble getting tires, but no real hassle.

If I got to worry about the DMV while I'm in
a Jeep Cherokee, I'm gonna be moving plum out of that state.

I think most places are strict enough on fuel that farm diesel is not used much/checked for. Local guy was filling up his diesel pick-up out of the farm fuel pump at the local filling station. The fuel station attendant went out and told him that he better not see him doing that again, or he was going to turn him in. When you got that going on, you really don't need law enforcement checking for it.

What's it like in your area?

I read that US DOT gives states the right to enforce or ignore DOT for local boys under 26K.
Indiana is a state that turns a blind eye to the small guy. No IN DOT # on many small trucks.

Only one time have I seen an Indiana State Cop in a pickup (our new INDOT officer) on US41. He had a semi pulled over that just left a Loves truck stop. I have NEVER seen INDOT officers stop small trucks and trailers under 26k.
I have seen a guy that lives in the neighborhood that is way over the 26k pulling a large bobcat.
No numbers on his very old 10k dump trailer.

I've never been stopped in the past.
I rarely haul my tractors anymore.

I have never been pulled in with my Super duty pulling tandem dual gooseneck. I got pulled in once with my three year old Int'l. tri-axle. I got top to bottom front to back and a sticker. The inspector told me that it was one of the best that he had ever seen. I have heard that they have been going hard after landscaper types around here. My one ton box trucks used to get a level A pretty frequently. One time my senior driver got pulled in for level A but it converted to level Z when his medical card was found to be expired. That cost me around $700.00 in fines. The fellow that bought my business was not concerned about inspections initially but after a few thousand in fines they got him turned around.

The Department of Motor Vehicles DMT is called, MTO / Ministry of Transportation Ontario here. And like other jurisdictions they are constantly on the lookout for potential violations. Where I live, there are a lot of gravel pits, and these trucks are constantly hammering down the road in often very questionable trucks, and trying to make as many loads a day as possible. This draws a lot of attention to our area by the inspectors and they dont just focus on Gravel trucks. While they are doing blitz inspections they will pull livestock trailers pulled by pickups, 18 wheelers with grain trailers and feed trucks. And it doesnt matter if the trucks only run at harvest and never get more than two thousand miles per year, same standards apply. So now we are starting to see 5th wheel 40 grain trailers on Joe-Dogs being pulled by farm tractors at harvest time hauling grain into local elevators.

Coming Soon.... Level 8 Inspections.
All virtual, the DOT man will know who is driving,If his Medical is up to date, already have a copy of Logs and probably already have the ticket written when the truck arrives at the Chicken House. Thank You Computerized Electronic Log Bovine Scattergory.

Does California make passenger vehicles randomly pull into DOT inspections?

Here in NY inspection stations are only on major highways near state borders and they are closed more often than open in my experience. When they are open they want nothing to do with anything non-commercial, such as passenger vehicles, RVs, old farmers towing their antique tractors around on goosenecks.

That inspection check, from the looks of it was mostly for commercial vehicles, and maybe a 15 year old pick with a couple lawn mowers, and a leaf
blower in the back. Stan

I know of at least 1 that is NOT on a major highway. Look on NY 41 between two of the finger lakes. I have also
seen one on US 20 around Depew (?) if I am not mistaken.

The 24hr fuel place here charges full taxes on off-road dyed off-road diesel unless you have their credit card or a fleet account with them. I wouldn't be surprised if the state doesn't get all the tax money they collect on that.
