I have a bunch of tractor and truck sheet metal that is very rust, surface rust, mostly. I remember using some quite effective rust removal products in the past. what works best?

Pretty much any product containing phosphoric acid. Rustoleum has some stuff in a squirt bottle that's pretty handy.

2X phosphoric acid. I use a delimer packed for the food service industry. you can also get milk stone remover from a dairy supply. They are a lot cheaper that the auto-body specialty products, and still dissolve the rust and convert what stays there to iron phosphate.
