Just need to complain, not tractor

I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The drivers door wouldn't stay open. The lower hinge is also the part to holds the door open. You would think auto
makers after over 100 years of making doors they would have finally figured how to hold a door open on a car with less than 35,000 miles, so it didn't
close on your leg. Now I have my $70.00 hinge, and from the instructions form the net, I need to hold the door up with a floor jack to change the hinge. Now I feel better, thanks for listening. Stan

I'm actually surprised you can get the door hinge for $70. The air seat quit on my CX 100. I can't physically do that kind of work laying on the floor of the tractor so I took it to dealer. New airbag, 2 small airlines and labor----$2100.

When u been around for over 8 decades , its perfectly normal! No problem. Some say its venting.

this woman was always an inspiration to me:

Thank you.

I think I posted this before. The EGR cooler valve on my Duramax powered pickup was acting up, I was getting codes. The valve is under the firewall, recommended repair is replace. To do so jack up the cab or remove the transmission for access to the tune of about $2500. With patience and about 19 hours it can be done without the above. I was able to cheat and fix it myself, it was sticking due to carbon but I knew a way to clean and lubricate it. You would think they would design something so it could be repaired!

I like to watch auto tech mike on youtube. it is just crazy how cars are made today. Have to remove two timing chains to change the water pump. Changing spark plugs is almost a major overhaul. Just stupid! And one brand is just as bad as the other.

I had that issue with my '07 Honda Civic ..... then after years and years of the door closing on my leg I figured out a solution. I prevented it from doing that by using my hand (and attached arm) to prevent the last half of the closure. Still works good and no problems since I figured it out.

Had the water pump on our 16 Ford Explorer V-6 changed this Spring. $325.00 for the pump. $1800.00 labor! Basically tore down the passenger end of the engine, dang things runs off the timing chain. Flat rate is right around 9 hours. Went in for oil change and rear brakes. $3400.00 later it was done. Ouch!

It gets better. New Fords with the 3.5 and 3.6 engines require engine to be removed from the chassis to replace a water pump. Labor and parts run over $4,000. The more I see of this stuff, the happier I am to stick with older cars for as long as they are still around and obtainable.

Where did you find the $4k # and the engine has to be removed? Got me curious and everything I can find shows and parts & labor less than $800 at a dealer. Youtube has how to videos that walk you thru the process.

Ive changed two of those ford water pumps in the last year. Not a fun job at all. I didnt come anywhere near the flat rate time.

Initial, manufacturing and repair engineering has hit an all time low. The lastest news is that repair costs for new cars has hit an all-time high because of the proprietory parts and repair costs required. Even the simplest repairs are practically impossible for the owner/novice because of lack of information, shop manuals and reasonable repair parts. So, the average consumer of this new junk sucks up the cost and gets discouraged and just trades it in, for an unreasonably low price. Nothing is saved and this man-made hunk of junk is recycled and wasted. Don't get me started! I will not go anywhere near any consumer junk on four wheels or any other lousy, poorly-made product.

stan, be careful when you remove the lower hinge.slide a wedge between the door and the a pillar so if the door shifts it doesnt crush your hand. you will need to tweek the door adjustment after the new hinge is installed. i have a door lifter at the body shop. basically a cart on wheels with a lift to hold the door. have a helper handy just in case. and dont crush the bottom of the door with the floor jack.

I will not go anywhere near any consumer junk on four wheels or any other lousy, poorly-made product. Then you won't be going any place.

Since at least the turn of the century auto makers have been recruiting people from insane asylums, mad at the world to design cars. That's why I won't have a vehicle less than 23 years old.

Instead of a floor jack, why not use a ratchet strap hanging from a rafter and loop it through the window opening?

Hanging a door on a car is difficult to do by yourself, especially at our age.
