I have 100 acres of good standing hay for sale in mid Tenn. Last year I got $5/bale for it but this year the hay is better & more of it. Is $8/ a bale a reasonable price to ask?

not making sense to me. last year you got 5.00 a bale so i presume that is small squares. then ur talking 600 1200 lb bales, so thats round bales that are on the small side. dont know if your making the hay or selling it on the stump???

$5/bale last year for 1200 lb. round bales. Selling it on the stump. Sorry for the confusion.

must be one hell of a crop of hay to get 6 bales per acre. yes i know not full size but still .

Hay price in my area of Southern Calif. two tie bales. Alfalfa 31.00, Bermuda 27.00 delivered. Just glad I don't have houses to feed. I do have 60 horses. They feed on diesel. Stan

Around here thousand poundish round bales are at least $120 for brome and $85 a bale for prairie. If it can even be found. Last year hay was in extremely short supply and so far this year it's not much better.

Around here, standing grass hay for some people is put up on half. Landowner gets half the bales, and the person that puts it up gets half the bales for putting it up.

If landowner is not interested in/don't have a use for the hay, they generally offer thier half to the custom hayer for regular market price.

If you want to sell all your hay standing in the field, then ask for half the market value of the bales. If that's $100 a ton, then ask for $50 a ton. They put it up, take all, and you get $50 a ton for all of it. You want the entire $100 a ton, then you go buy a swather, tractor, rake, and baler, and just knock yourself out.

Hay prices are a regional thing. You cant make enough money from selling hay here to make it worth while. Most that make hay just feed it to their own stock. Selling hay standing, you may as well just rent out the land.

You can t just assume the hay is better and figure its worth 50 percent more than it was. What is better that makes it worth that much more? The only way to know is have it tested. Also worth mentioning that its mid July, its way past prime at this point. Unless one cutting has already been removed, quality is going to be mediocre at best.

I can only speak for around here. Demand has been trending down for a few years now. I see more fields uncut or worked up for row crops.

If your selling a 1200 pound round bale for $5 you should stay at home and enjoy the air conditioning to be frank. Around here square bales go for $5 - $9 a piece. Round bales (4x5) are $45 to $70. That's for clean Bahia.

What part of "on the stump" are people missing?

To me that means, standing hay. You come, cut it, rake it, bale it with your own equipment, and pay me $8 for every bale you take off the field.

I say you can ASK $8, but you're going to get a lot of pushback.
