Seems kind of rare for a photographer to have taken a picture like that for a family. Yet for a private individual to have had a camera probably just as rare. At that time in history.
 
Given the 2 stacks of what appear to be burlap bags, I would be inclined to say apples or potatoes going in the barrels. Lots of pictures of Maine and New Brunswick potatoes being shipped to NYC in barrels. At one time, a lot of apples were shipped from Canada and U.S. to Britain in barrels. That gave rise to the saying One bad apple will spoil the whole barrel.
 
The soiled work stained clothes looks like what my grandparents wore, but they would never have a picture made in them.
 
I would bet a dollar to a do nut,,, that these folks were intended to be in their work attire for the photographer . back in the dust bowl days USA hired a photogragher to wander the entire USA to take hardship and work pictures for the National Archives ,,.
