1992 555c ford back hoe engine hunting at mid rpm range and at idle , I am thinking a bad injector seeing as all filters are new. getting a little black smoke when you accelerate.

Sounds more like a sloppy governor in the Injection Pump. If it was injectors they would either slobber or miss with smoke all the time. It would also probably miss when first started.

If you have a push button primer on the intake manifold, the diaphragm may be breaking up and letting air in there. If damp with fuel in that area, change the diaphragm. Check the lines between fuel filter and injector pump for any deficiencies that might let air in. Air makes those pumps unstable rpm wise.

that push button primer does leak when you use it and now that i think about it there is some wet dust collecting around that area. I will look at it first thing when i get home.

There is air coming in the fuel somewhere. The push button is a easy place to start. Having a sight glass in the fuel line would confirm that. Hunting at idle IS a sign of air in the fuel, not a governor issue,

Guido.

mic-t,

Also air in the fuel will make the engine come down to idle slow and erratic,

Guido.
