Fed my first round bale

I had to put out hay today for the beef cows. Never have I had to feed hay in June. The first crop of hay was only fair and unless something changes there will be no more grass hay. I chopped a silage bag of rye last week because I figure hay is going to get expensive real quick. Our corn is usually shoulder high by July 4th but I can't see how it will be even waist high. I know other areas deal with this often but this something very different here in southwest WI. Our last drought was 2012 and we still did over 100 bu corn. There is double crop corn that has been in the ground close to 4 weeks and not sprouted yet. We topdressed our corn with urea with a N stabilizer and cultivated it in to cover it. We plan to make a silage bag of oatlage in a few weeks and after combining our rye all those acres will be planted to oats to hopefully get a fall crop or at least fall pasture. One thing about dry weather is it takes no management as what ever you don't finish today is there the next day. I haven't put much wear on the hay tedder either. Tom

No corn is going to be knee high by the 4th of July around here. A lot of soybeans including most of mine are just breaking through the ground now.

It looks like the NWS has upgraded the drought status over by you to severe levels. Seems you're down about 8. Hope you get some rain this weekend.

Baled up my corner piece that was cut yesterday morning. What looked to be dark green wet hay this afternoon was so dry, it was brittle. Never seen such a thing before.

Think I found a solution to the Super 8 player issue. Also think I found your number & will try it out shortly here.

The ground that got a heavy dose of manure this spring and was planted to corn still looks good but is only shin high. The corn that got conventional fertilizer does not and is a few inches shorter. The beans stopped growing a few weeks ago. If we don't get significant rain over the next month there will be little to no 3rd cutting. Whatever sub soil moisture there was 2nd cutting hay used it
I am in west michigan

My garden is a disaster. I don't garden for the harvest.I garden for enjoyment. This drought is no funso I will just buy my veggies at the market.

the drought has been fun for me here. the mosquitos that normally own this township all summer, starting june 1st, are absent. on the downside, very few fireflies this year as well :(

last year in southwest mo we couldnt buy a rain.
several fields soybeans had nothing to cut. we started dry but we got rains for a change. weather we never know

It's even worse here at my place. The worst drought I've seen since the mid 70s. We may get some ain this weekend tho.

Interesting to read that this drought is much larger than the experts care to share, here in north central Illinois no real rain since I planted beans 5 weeks ago never seen it this dry this early in the crop season. mMy wheat looks like maybe 60 bushel if I am lucky normal closer to 90 or more. 1st cutting alfalfa hay was very good and 2nd about to cut looks about same as last year on the 2nd or less and grass waterway hay was about 1/2 of normal.

Its rough. We had flooding rains when we should have been planting, planted late into wet conditions to catch up, and it hasnt rained since, crops re small and cant reach moisture in the subsoil. Had a heat wave this week, its looking tough.

Thry forecast rain tomorrow, but we have heard that before and got .12. That wont do it......

So far very similar year to 2012 here. Way too wet at planting, thrn zero rain the rest of summer.

We are on our day 3 of rain here in SE PA, after about 8 weeks of none. Soft rain too. Our hay yields are off by 30%. Alfalfa always comes back but the grass hay got cooked hard so will need to see how that goes. We are feeding hay to the sheep too. Not a good sign.

Northwest Ohio. On the 4th I have had 10 foot tall, normally about 8 foot. This year few fields might make waist high, A lot will not make knee high. Driving by fields yesterday some don't look to be over 6-8 inches tall. Don't think they will even be good for chopping. Good that I am not farming any more.

You guys need to raise your cloud nets a little higher. We haven't had two consecutive clear days all June. I can see PTO shaft clutches burning out on mowers if we ever get a drying stretch.
