I know a guy that had a semi tractor with a dry van tip on its side in the ditch on I 80 in north east Iowa. The tow/recovery bill to upright the rig and pick up the bales of scrap cardboard came to $49,700. That is going to really hurt me oops, I mean that guy come insurance renewal time. Bill

It's possible that the tow company did the same thing that doctors do when submitting their bill to Medicare, or your insurance company..............write a ridiculous amount, knowing that they might get half that in all actuality. It's a game they play. But, God Forbid you don't have insurance......you pay the full phony bill.

Probably not that far out of line. A new Rotator wrecker costs over a million bucks. Insurance on these rigs is out of this world. Average cost per hour in my neck of the woods is $1500.00 Per hour. A lot of the time it takes two to get a wreck up, plus two helpers. A skid steer to load the Cardboard and another truck to haul it away, more helpers, people to flag traffic and it goes on and on. Recovery is expensive. I have two good friends in the business. Sometimes the storage bill amounts to about as much as the recovery, if someone drags their feet and don't pay the bill. Not taking up for anyone charging too much, just saying it costs a lot of money to do business today. Been there for over 45 years.

I remember back in the mid 70s when I was hauling milk, we had an ice storm. One of the other haulers slid off the road and had to have a big wrecker pull him out. He was mad as a wet hen because it cost him $40. He said that was more than he made that day. The guy who owned the route that I was driving told me to take the truck back home and leave it, it wasn't worth the risk. Times have sure changed.

A co-worker had a commercial milk tanker tip over in the road ditch next to his acreage yard. The tow company drained the load of milk into the soil and the fire department hosed down the area to dilute the milk and flush it down the ditch. A year later the site still smelled and still attracted tons of flies. His wife would not let the kids play on that side of the yard anymore.

If a tow company did that today the EPA would own them
We had a milk tanker overturn near us a few years ago
Had the bring in another tanker and pump truck to off load the milk

Interesting reply here. I watch the tv show Highway thru Hell. You never see any paper transactions, name exchange, or any mention of the cost or how the expenses get back to the owner or trucking company. I often wonder what the cost is. This helps answer that.

Neighbor will be glad to pick up your truck and clean
up the mess. Flat beds, drop deck, refrigerated vans or
dry vans, portable tanks to off load your tanker.
Vacuum for bulk clean ups, skid loaders and somewhere
around 20 wreckers and rollbacks on call 24/7.
someone told me his big rotator will lift 50 ton. He
needs the income to pay for the 6 door Ford Pickup he
pulls his camper with.(5 kids)
