Thoughts on ford 8000 tractor

I am looking at an 8000 tractor and wondering if they are good machines. I have a 4000 now and had another one years ago and we re very happy with the 4000 series just wondering if bigger tractors are good quality too it has 2 shifters on the dash. I was told to stay away from the selectors speeds but if I looked at the right pics on google the selecto speed is one shifter right under the steering wheel is that correct. The pic is not the one of the tractor but is the same. Runs great looks good. I would be getting it for 4000$

Put a decent amount of hours on a 9000 every year. Liked that one enough we bought an 8000 as a project tractor that we are slowly bringing back. Both are easy to run and easy to work on. Parts are available. I would not hesitate to buy another one of each.

hanks I appreciate it

What you are referring to as the "shifter speed" is probably "Dual Power". The dual power was introduced with the 8000 and gives you a high low shift under full, load power shift unit. It is a very strong, reliable auxiliary, and is shifted by pressing on one of two buttons or a rocker on the floor under the steering wheel. The Ford 401 in the turboed 9000 had cavitation problems but not in the 8000. I would say that you can't go wrong for $4,000.

from what I remember the only shifting was on the dash it has 2 levers low neutral and high on one a and 1-4 and reverse 5-8 reverse on other. I tried to load a pic but I can t figure out how. This is the shifter if the pic load

For the sake of full disclosure I never owned one but they never seemed to stick around long on the farms that had them. Most
were bought new. The neighbor just to the north traded his on a new IH 966 because the frustration was too much. Another farmer
in the township parked his in the weeds and bought a new JD 4440. The hydraulic system was one complaint.

Early 8000's had back end/hydraulic oil filtration issues. I think ford addressed it on later models and there was a recall
on early ones...but might be worth checking. Also shift fork issues so check it gets every gear. I know I looked at one that
could only select low range!

Runs good, looks good....and if it has decent tires I dont think you cant get hurt for only $4000. that is cheap HP. That said, seems to me the 5000 was the jewel of that lineup, with the 4000 and 7000 being good ones too. I just dont see hardly any 8000's still around working FWIW.

Back when they were new, several were sold
in this area. The vast majority of them
seldom lasted over a year on the farm.
Most were traded off for another brand and
then went to a tractor auction. My FIL
bought a 9000. It lasted 2.5 years before
the motor self destructed. The sleeves
and pistons had to come from England. The
brakes ran in the hydraulic oil. The
brakes went bad and took out the whole
hydraulic system. He had that fixed before
the motor went bad. He waited over 8
months on sleeved and pistons. He needed
a tractor so he got rid of the 9000 and
bought a Allis 190XT. Around here the
6000 commando was worse than the 8 or
9000's. Good luck with your decision.

Neighbor had one ,how long dont remember . But when I got close to it ,we were working spread fertilizers ,seemed to clash the gears a lot .
Thats what I remember about it.
They kept the 5000 ford but big ford not too long .

This engine does not have sleeves. This was a very good engine. Your FIL must have gotten a lemon. We had over 11,000 hours on our first 8000. We have had 9000, 9600 and TW 10 which is all the same basic engine. They were a very good tractor for that time.

Don't think twice about anything about Fords posted by hd6gtom. He used to take delight in posting weekly about all the Ford Ns that he had picked up and hauled to the scrapper. He is just looking for reaction.

Dallas Craigs list has a cab mounted 9600 near Bailey TX. Guy took care of his stuff....I just bought a smaller Case I-
H from him and it is a good machine well cared for.
