Need Picture of Ford501 Sickle Mower

Could someone SHOW me which part I am missing on my sickle mower? I see there is a piece missing, possibly a pin, (see picture) that keeps the ball hitched onto the pitman arm.

I need to order this part but have no idea what part it is.

Any help would be great! We have to use the implement to hay in a few days. Oh boy.

That top flap over centers and the spring below it keeps the ears clamped onto the ball.

Im not sure I understand what is missing?

Is there a little flat rod going into the spring below?

If you go to new holland parts and look up 501 you can get to an exploded image of the mower. Yes its tedious to find the page you want but its there somewhere, and usually doesnt link properly so cant do it for you.

Spring, Key #28 forces ''lever'' Key # 27 towards ball, and the ''horns'' on it's sides hold the straps (23 and 24) tight on the ball.

Yes! Thank you!

I wish this forum were on Facebook. Easier to navigate. But thanks so much!

Farmher,

You might know all of this already, if so, please ignore this post. Here are two things that might apply to your situation:

1. The thing that rotates up and down to clamp the pitman straps to the pitman bar is called the pitman lever, and it is being pushed by the part you are missing. The part you are missing is called, not surprisingly, the pitman spring. It is very difficult to get the pitman lever up to release the clamping action of the pitman straps from the sickle bar. Difficult, but not impossible.

2. The pitman straps are bolted onto the pitman rod with four bolts. You would be very wise to insure that the nuts on the bolts that are holding the pitman straps to the pitman rod are very tight. If they are loose and flopping around, the pitman rod will split.

Good luck with your 501. I have one that I've used for about 20 years. Although it can be a pain in the neck, it's what I have.

Ick. I think a fair number of us wouldnt be here if this were on that Facebook thing you speak of!

This site probably isnt perfect, but they put a lot of work into making it function very well for us.
