37 loader SCV

Does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement SCV joytstick for a 37 Front End Loader on an early 1020JD? I've noticed that my loader gets weak when I have the clutch pedal pressed in(disengaged). I changed over to the ported filter cover recently and I saw improvement but I'm seeing this issue now with the clutch pressed in. Thanks for your help. You guys are a wealth of knowledge that no dealership can match.

I don't think I have seen a joystick used as a JD SCV. Are you talking about the SCV (Selective Control Valve), located beside the seat, used to control the rear remote couplings or a loader control valve, normally mounted on the loader frame?

With the clutch disengaged the transmission oil pump is not supplying oil to the reservoir and main pump. The transmission pump could be weak, not keeping the reservoir full, an bad check valve in the main pump inlet line, or a weak main pump are some possibilities I think of. You need to do the diagnostics for the hydraulic system in your 1020 service manual.

Thanks for the tips Jim. I do need to do a full hydraulic system evaluation instead of just throwing parts at it.

I was referring to the control valve on the loader frame. It's currently a 2 handle valve and I'd rather have a joystick style if I'm going to replace it anyway.

The loader valve is called just that, not the SCV valve.

Simple test: Remove FEL control valve return hose from from tractor ported filter cover. With clean container under open hyd ported filter orifice engage starter for 15 seconds. Measure oil in container which should be a little over a gallon. Next plug orifice on ported filter cover. Aim open FEL valve return hose into open hyd filler hole behind seat. With loader control valve levers in neutral start engine & no oil should exit open return hose. If no oil exits open hose then loader valve isn't causing tractor hyd or loader to get weak. If oil exits open return hose then we need to know if loader valve has a built in relief valve or a closed-center conversion plug.

With hyd oil at operating temp, 3pt raised, engine operating, look in open hyd filler hole behind seat for moving/spraying oil. Moving/spraying oil indicates faulty rockshaft control valve seals.

Mine will do the same as it was originally ordered with a single clutch (no live PTO) I do have the parts to convert it....someday

Go to surpluscenter.com. They've got a 2 spool joystick that's just what you're looking for. It works great on my 66 1020.

2 Spool 12 GPM Joystick Loader Valve Wolverine by Prince Mfg WLVT21CGB5A1
ITEM NUMBER: 9-12473
PRICE: $284.85

Be sure to get a closed center plug, if applicable to your application.

Closed center hyd's but early model 1020's also had open center power steering powered by a separate open center hyd pump mounted to RH front of engine

Would that mean a closed center loader
control valve would not work for me, with
the power steering pump being open
centered?

Does your loader have single acting cylinders to raise and lower the bucket? Mine does and this is what I saw on the surplus center description.

Wolverine by Prince. Compact two spool joystick valve for operating double acting cylinders. Ideal for use on front end loaders on small to medium sized tractors

Closed center hyd's for hyd system & open center hyd's for power steering on 1020 tractors prior to serial # 045200 have no connection to each other except utilizing same hyd oil reservoir IE 2 totally separate hyd systems on same tractors.

Yes, I've got a 37 loader, too. The boom cylinders are single acting, power up/gravity down. Like I said, the joystick works great on mine. It has a float position on the boom down circuit, allowing the bucket to follow contours when back dragging. I replaced the twin stick/2 spool stock valve with the joystick. Plan on a hydraulic fluid/filter change if you upgrade, it could be a source of your slow hydraulics.
