Stumped on 560 D

62 Farmall 560 D, had run perfect for many years, but this year its killing me. Ive rabbit holed fixes until Im about to throw in the towel. Rebuilt pump, rebuilt injectors, double checked timing multiple times. Still can only start by pulling, tons of smoke, only lumbers with no power. Hopefully some of you can see what you think from video.

..Rebuilt.. means it was done by a professional company with the proper test equipment? You have checked the air intake system no mice or bird nest? You have set the valves, checked compression? Sorry, you video did not post.

I would be looking at the cylinder head for missing combustion chamber parts, friend had an Oliver 66 diesel doing the same thing. The energy cells were missing. We put them in and starts great. May have been taken out if head was reworked.

Lets try again on video. A couple of other pieces of info: engine has never been rebuilt/opened, both diesel pump and injectors were rebuilt by very reputable shop in Houston, glow plugs show red hot when pulled and tested.

Unhook fuel return line on top of pump and try starting. Caution, it will make s mess. You may have a plugged line or check valve on the return fuel. If so it will not run or will start but run erratically. This line is 1/4 inch and connects to a elbow on top of the pump. When unhooked the line should not leak fuel because of the check valve where it connects to the bottom of the tank

Been stated on this forum in the past that the timing could be 180 degrees off. A Diesel will run if you get the cylinders wet enough, regardless of injection timing...which meshes with your having to pull start it. The injectors are simply replenishing the puddle of fuel in the cylinders.

Fritz, a couple of things. The pump wasn't pumping strong at all. Shop said the store bought diesel had set up to long and algae and water had made a mess of the pump. Will be switching to red diesel. After that repair it pull started but ran really bad. Had the injectors rebuilt, all new gaskets, etc on injectors. Still required puling and running better but still very poor. The pump was installed with timing mark at 3 BTD, pump marks then aligned, #1 piston (very front of tractor) was all the way at top. Fuel return line was tested and clear. (I have no check valve).

Red diesel is just diesel with dye in it. Nothing about it makes it better worse - just no tax.

I agree that the pump may be timed on the wrong stroke. #1 at top; but on the end of exhaust instead of end of compression.

Pull the #1 glow plug and bar the engine over til you have pressure at the hole. Now bring it up to the degree you have it timed at and stop. Take the cover off the injector pump and see where the marks are. If everything is aligned we can forget the timing once and for all. Not calling you incompetent at all its just that we are not there to see it so we have to make a blind diagnosis. We need as much info as possible if we are to solve this.

So I guess Im just not getting what else or how to get the pump right. If the timing marks are on 3 BTD, and the pump marks on the site window are aligned, how can it be or how do I adjust for 180 out?

Fritz, no offense taken! Im a pretty good handyman and car guy, but struggling with my 560D abilities. So many rabbit holes that are easy to go down. THANKS for all advice, no matter how duh it might seem!

My uncles 560D would not go much past idle after sitting a year. Turns out the return was plugged at the tank not at pump fitting.

So after reading MANY of you guys other posts and watching many videos, I think Im 180 out. #1 is on exhaust, #6 on compression. Pull starts fine, tuns like crap. Sooo if I get TDC on COMPRESSION STROKE, can I then slide out pump, rotate 180, and Im good to go? Will pump marks line up agsin? I.e. pump marks can be lined up on compression or exhaust?

Look in the window first before you take anything apart. If you are certain you are on compression at TDC, both marks will be aligned or very nearly so. If one of them is missing, then you need to rotate the pump 180deg.
