DUM DUM DUM! I did it again. After learning 25 years ago that places like tsc, fastenal, ace hardware et al are a waste of time and stopped going there. They never had what I needed. If they have the odd bolt or nut, it was listed at $5 for 1 or 2. I needed some paint for a project. The place I bought my original from, RAPCO, suppliers of military shades of paint, no longer stocked my color and so I went to tsc yesterday thinking I could just find something close. Nope. NO-GO. I'll go on MON to a MO & Pop place 35 miles from me, an automotive supplier specializing in paint. Bet I'll find a close match there. The glorified pet food and overpriced hardware stores have nothing to do with tractors by the way. Made for suckers.

How often do you buy paint? Answer probably explains why places don't carry it.On the other hand I buy bolts, hydraulic fluid and food for my FARM guard dogs at TSC thee all the time.Places sell what actually sells.

Wow Ace and TSC must be different in MI than in ND. Very seldom do ever go into those two places and not find what I went in for. Of course they don't have every obscure item imaginable but both have a pretty impressive inventory in their respective categories. In my local stores anyway, your results may vary!

Like you said, you should have learned 25 years ago that TSC stands for Toys Shoes and Clothes.

95 percent of the people coming through the door want horse feed dog shampoo rural fence supplies and lawn mower parts.
5 percent of the people coming through the door want military color paint tractor parts and farm supplies.
I have limited shelf space so sorry you 5 percent will have to go somewhere else.

Going to TSC looking for paint in a military color is about as bad as going to a paint store and looking for horse or dog food.

Wanting to finish up planting a few weeks ago and needed a taper head bolt for my grain drill. Dealer could get it next Tuesday. I was thrilled to pay $5.00 for a 3/8 by 1 inch bolt at True Value on a Saturday morning to get me going again.

Both Lowes and Gillmans locally have Hillmans hardware assortments where I can usually find needed single hardware parts.

No, I did not say always.

I go to TSC but not too often. The local COOP has a lot, and the "real" farm store where we typically shop 30 miles away has a lot as well, however both are closed by 5:30pm weekdays and by noon on weekends while TSC is open until ~9pm so off hours TSC is helpful for what they do carry. As others noted, you can't really fault them for carrying what people mostly buy.

I frequent TSC. Especially for bolts, nuts, washers, cat food, and yes clothes sometimes. Cant beat them on standard bolts. They sell by the pound while ACE and other big stores sell by the piece.

Its frustrating, but stores stock what sells, and real farm stuff doesnt sell much volume any more.

Big farmers are tied to a dealer now, needs laptops and special parts. Nothing generic left to buy from a storefront.

Not so many of us using 1940s through 80s stuff any more.

So, is what it is.

Paul

Interesting to Fastenal Tomorrow on your list. Fastenal has been moving away from guys like us, but even as a contractor we can no longer find the stores manned. The local stores have moved to a model where there guy is out snooping the fastener cribs that they stock and you can call him on his cellularized telephone to place your order so he can set them outside his store two days from now and you can come get them.

Im ready to move on from this McDonalds business model.

Sherwin-Williams and most small hardware stores can scan a color sample and tint their paints to match your sample. Did you need it in an aerosol spray can or something else special?

I agree, SW ,scan are 95 percent accurate. Good for me.
They did my new idea bittersweet orange and my ihc equipment blue , gravely red , ihc cub cadet 1000 yellow .
And reasonable price for quarts of enamel.

My local TSC carries pto shafts, hydraulic hoses and fittings, roller chain and sprockets, hydraulic cylinders, oils and fluids, tractor batteries, 3 point parts, tune up, carburetor and muffler parts for older tractors. They have belts and pulleys. They have a pretty good selection of the more universal and common tractor related supplies. If I blow a hydraulic hose at 7pm I can't go to the paint place for a replacement, but I can go to TSC for it.
