needed an oil filter for the 444 massey, phoned bumper to bumper. first time the parts man says i cant find any listing for that. do u have a number. i said no number on this filter. gave him dimentions. i still cant fine it. so then i go to a parts tractor and open up the canister and pull out another filter get a number then phone back different parts man this time. he says yes we have 2 filters. i said how much ,.. he says 53.00. i said are u sure on that price. i said i was expecting 10-15.00 for this. ooh well then i can do 40.00 i said well if that the best ok. so since it was a massey number on the filter i phoned the dealership the girl says yes we have 2 filters. i said how much , she says 17.00 , i said ok get it on the counter. then i phoned bumper back and said what are you guys pulling off her i just got that filter for 17.00 parts man says well that way below my cost. i said well you better let the head guys know about this, this is right from the dealer and you guys are jobber. went and got my 17.00 filter. and going to tractor show in the morning. just a bunch of crooks. and this is the second time i have run into these stupid prices on filters. last one was for cockshutt 1755.

Yep , btdt . Every year i go thru the push mower and every year it's the same thing carb has garbage in it , clean carb and one pull mower runs . This year i looked at the air filter and Nah it needs a new one and the WAR Dept wants to MOW NOW . So i run to T S C and sine they sell Huskavaren (sp) they will have and air filer , YES THEY DID and just for a 20 dollar bill your ready to go . Only place in town and they have you where the fur is short . SO i bought it mumbled all the way home . Got the mower going fine , then i went filter hunting on AMAZON and Bought FIVE for ten bucks .

$30 is pretty steep for a canister filter. My local Car Quest has a 1/2 price filter sale every March. I stock up. Just oil filters I wish fuel filters.

Back in December of 2022 I priced a fuel pump for my 07 Chevy Silverado at local auto parts stores & they were around $300-350. By April of 2023 they wanted $470-500.

I'm working on a ford 1910 compact for a friend. Looked up wix air filter at O'Reilly it was something like $67.00, another 40 something. I went to Amazon and bought a whole kit, oil, air, fuel, hydraulic for $104. They arrived one was a Baldwin, two were wix, one fleetguard.

You want real robbery? Potato chips have gone up over 40%. That's really hurting my wallet.

I don't know why, but people seem to get out of the habit of price checking things at the dealership all together. I'm guilty of it myself. Just don't even price check something from there at all, unless its a part that you can only get from through there.

But the truth is, some things are actually about the same price, and a few are cheaper. We don't make a tendency to price check, because in all, parts at the dealership do have a tendency to be higher.

I have ran into quality issues as well. Maybe not on oil filters. But someplace else might have a cheaper price on something, but it will be of lesser quality as well. I ussually run into this on wear items.

But back to the oil filter thing. About the only thing that makes sense to me on this, would be the retail prices are based off of volume of sales. Not to many people would walk into a local bumper to bumper and ask for a Massey 444 oil filter. Therefore, their volume of sales on this item would be much lower, than perhaps back at the dealership. So the dealership moves more volume of these things. And that equates to cheaper for them from thier supplier, because those sales are likelwise based off of volume as well. A pallet full is cheaper than 4 or 5 individuals when it comes to wholesale. The dealership is likely supplied by a place that feeds multitudes of dealerships. A place that buys pallet fulls, and then breaks it down. Bumper to bumper would have a similar system. But maybe they don't move enough of them to buy a pallet full, even at thier hub.

I'd price check back at the dealerships more than I do, but my savings would be lost most of the time on driving the extra miles further to go to the dealership to get it. Car quest is 10 miles one way, but closest dealerships are 40 miles one way.

Local cnh dealer still cant figure out how Deere is cheaper for an oem filter including buying the gaskets separately from Deere than cnh can sell me a jobber filter for yet they have the largest inventory of parts in 4 states they claim . Im not even on the important customer price list at the Deere dealer

All the dealers arounf here and the local truck parts house that handles a lot of filters for lots of equipment dose the 10 percent deal in the early part of the year some in January and some as late as march. This is for all filter so I keep a years or more stock on hand. I suppose I will get sticker shock next time I order filters, or will be looking for some that are robbery if I get them there.

My go to place for filters used to be RK before they stopped carrying the filters I use on my terramite and farmall tractors.
Advance Auto has the hydraulic filters and oil filters I use and prices are less than $10..
Napa prices are much more.

If you know the number on the filter Check out Amazon prices.
I buy a dozen oil filters for lawn mowers for under $5 each off amazon.

It's NOT only oil filters that have gone up since the start of 2021 along with inflation, gas and grocery prices, BEER HAS LIKE DOUBLED ALSO grrrrrrrrrr LOL

It pays to shop around that's what I do but remember there can still be a difference in quality. And there's the old sayings You get what you pay for The price is what the traffic will bear and dont forget Supply and Demand

Shop wisely everyone have a great day

PS I l love Masseys esp 44 Specials (were they made in Canada?? what was their difference??) 44's, 444's and the were they late 44 and 444?? with the live power hand clutch sort of like some AC's..........Over the years when farming I had over 7 of them.........Id like a 44 with a matching sickle bar mower FOR THAT HIGH REAR END PTO Why did Massey have the PTO so high ???????????????????????????

Filters are one of the parts that have the highest markups. For most of my equipment, I buy Wix filters from Rock Auto. Look up the numbers on Wixs site, search the number at rock. Including shipping it is usually half the cost of locally.

Surprisingly the local Cat dealer has very competitive prices on filters for the one piece of Cat equipment I own.

I needed an air filter for my 25hp Generac generator. NAPA said $41.00 but not in stock, they will have to order it. So I went home and ordered one from Amazon. $11.00 free shipping!.

Evenings is a great time to search for parts and prices online. We should no longer expect a counter person to look up part numbers as a personal service for free.
