I m new to working on tractors so forgive me for any ignorance. I recently started working on a John Deere 50 and can t get it to start. It replaced the points and condenser, it has a brand new 12V battery and new spark plugs. When I step on the ignition it cranks but won t start. Any tips on what I should check? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The old saying you need Fuel Spark and Compression. As far as a good spark to the
plugs goes, try my troubleshooting IFFFFFF you have gas and compression that is???

In addition to what John T sez, you also need air. Make sure your air intake isn't clogged. Those little 50s are quick starting tractors when everything is in order.

The gas shut off mechanism that turns on with engine oil pressure may need to be manually opened to get the first gas into the carburetor if it has sat for a long time and the gas in the carb has evaporated. To do this manual operation, the circular knob on top of the sediment bowl assembly needs to be turned CCW and then pushed down against the spring-loaded valve. To check for gas flow, open the plug on the bottom of the carb and see if gas flows out. Once you have gas flow, return the circular knob on sediment bowl back CW to full tightened.

Depending on how long it has been since last running it may be good to drain any old gas and refill with new and some Stabil or Seafoam.

Oh, the correct name you step on to start is the starter pedal, not the ignition.
